Unrealistic Ending

I cannot believe a spy who could kill just about anyone without blinking, leaves Lucy alive. Why not kill her and the boy and set fire to the lighthouse? Then go safely in submarine. Why is she left alive multiple times? Even after she starts to shoot at him, he - being a trained soldier - could easily hide and come around her and kill her. But no he stands in front of her ready to be shot. The spy who could not be killed by British army and secret service, is shot to death by a woman who could not use the revolver properly.

In the novel, he was an art lover. He asks himself the same question; why not just kill her and remove the threat she poses? His answer to himself was that he could not bear to destroy something beautiful.

He liked her.

Hence the sex.

Hence not wanting to kill her.

He was able to coldheartedly kill anyone who threatened his mission in the state of war, but with Lucy he experienced his humanity again via genuine warmth & love. It's what dooms him.
