The Bridge (SPOILERS)

I really like this film. I need to start saying that, because I'm about to be critical of the bridge scene at the end.

I find the film interesting in that it combines action movies with horror (all the sneaking around and the "crazies") and presented a very interesting environment in which to set the whole narrative. Some fairly neat side characters, too. I have some other gripes about the movie (infinite ammo in the guns, for example, and the fact that we didn't get to see more of the prison) but they're small grips.

What I want to say, though, is that I felt like the bridge scene near the end was bungled. They say right from the get-go that the bridge is covered in mines, but they only hit, what?, four or five? It seems like running across might get you lucky and safe. Anyway, they spend about half the movie reinforcing that this is an impossible fool's errand but for the Brain's map. Only, Snake basically ignores Brain and still makes it 9/10 of the way across the bridge. Then the car blows up, but most of them are fine and they hoof it. The next one dead, though, is Brain, who is reading the chart. If this guy knows where the mines are, how come he's the one who gets snuffed? Meanwhile, the Duke of New York is barreling down on them, and he seems to be able to dodge the mines, too. How does that work?

It sorta undermined (pun intended) the setup of the scene. Why not have it be a race against time? They're picking their way over the bridge. The Brain is reading the chart, but too slowly for Snake's liking, because he's running out of time with his neck bombs about to go off. Plus, the Duke of New York is closing in behind them, so they have to hold him off while painfully advancing. Maybe rushing it is what gets them killed, not just random chance?

I dunno... It's not a bad action scene, it just felt like it threw out a lot of the set-up and inbuilt tension that the movie had spent so long establishing. Why not use what they wrote?
