One of the most racist movies ever

It’s sad that is an example of how America was and still is. This is a perfect example of how the majority in America sees the minorities. People are dark color are just loathed by society. I thought Undercover Brother was racist, but this one takes the cake. And that’s without usage of the N word amazingly. I have seen other movies that glorify and display racism, but this one is more disturbing because EVERYBODY is that way in the film.

Anyways, I just got around to seeing this movie (yeah I know, it took my over 25 years lol). I am trying to see all movies Denzel has been in, and I am almost done.

This movie works so hard to dis racism it's almost annoying. It reminds me of a comedic "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" as far as racial politics go.

The movie's main points, as far as I can tell, are:

1) Black people are human too, and don't live up to stereotypes.
2) Society is mind-blowingly racist, and it will make people turn their backs on
you at the drop of a hat.
3) White women are vapid morons who love only themselves and money. Also, they
secretly want to be raped.

Really, this is an anti-racist movie. It's a social satire.
However, the rampant SEXISM of the movie made my jaw drop. Did people really condone this in 1981? Where was the outrage? "Dinner" has some of this 'messed-up white woman' theme too. Reaching out to The Brothers at Damey's expense. For shame.

Here's an idea for a movie party: Carbon Copy, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and High Plains Drifter. Invite your feminist friends, it'll be fun!

Don't forget SOUL MAN.

If you think this is one of the most racist movies ever, you should see that piece of crap Crash (Paul Haggis). It thinks it's anti-racist as well.

reply

I wonder if you still think this movie is racist when you consider that the director, Michael Schultz, is african-american.

What in the hell does him being the Director (and no he did not write the movie either) have to do with anything? Also him being African-American doesn't make a difference IMO either.

reply

LOL!! What does the director have to do with anything?? Because all the director does is yell "action", "cut" and "print it". LOL!

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

Jejozi....directors don't (typically) write a film they direct. Especially since this film was written by Stanley Shapiro.

reply

Actually directors have control over the script and often re-write them or have uncredited rewrites done. But what I find disturbing is your anti-Semitic comment about the credited screen writer

- out of that year's contenders, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was actually the one that deserved the win. phenomenal direction by lee and one of the greatest screen performances of all time from ledger. not to mention a beautiful and poignant story. CRASH was dreadful.

Yeah it's bad but remember it was a HUGE bomb back in 1981. Segal apologized for this movie in an interview I read years ago and Washington (understandably) won't talk about it. Back in 1981 you could actually get away with the racism AND incredible sexism in this movie. Hard to believe an African-American man directed this.

reply

Thank goodness I have never met anyone who talks about black people like those in this film.

reply

Go watch Blazing Saddles and tell me which movie is worse.

reply

Ditto!...Blazing Saddles takes the cake!...This movie has a lot going on in it, but I think it is harmless...some people need to get over themselves. Here's a line from the movie "when will we quit owing them?"...thirty years later we have a black president and things are really messed up.

reply

I think this is the kind of movie that Sasha Baron Cohen would make if he's living in 1981.

Why does Denzel ashamed of this movie? I thought it is refreshing that his character doesn't go all defensive (offensive?) when his father being all racist/inconsiderate/insensitive, instead Roger just laugh at him. (and of course his father being all that is what make this a comedy)

I'm asian btw, not american. So consider this as an outsider point of view.

reply

I watched this movie for the first time in many years today. It reminded me I changed my name as to not sound Jewish. Seems ridiculous now. But it wasn't at the time.

Blazing Saddles is farce. And considering Richard Pryor "punched up" the script, I don't think you can call it racist.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

why do ppl act so shocked when they see movies like this & others names in this thread.so sad ppl in america really believe racism does'nt exist, that things have changed, movies give u a hard slap in the face of reality.I not too long ago watched chris roc's don't shoot the messenger,& he says how can ppl mainly african americans be shocked at racist siuations, but they are. here's something else to piss u off, check out this movie with james brolin, final justice. I got this racist piece of crap at wal-mart for $1.u can be shocked, surprised & angered all over again.but I can't understand why, america has always been this way.when I see these type of movies all I say is,"ummmm hum!

reply

LOL It is not racist, it was directed by a negro, therefore it is only misogynist. Don't complain about racism when negros are beating their women and the negress has to call the "honky" cops to come and save them from the negro, and when the cops shoot that thug, the BLM terrorists come out to loot and riot. Now if you are actually dumb enough to be surprised by "racism" in America, just go have a look at Africa (South Afria doesn't count, that had good stuff built by White people LOL) No one wants USA to become like Africa, that's why it is felt to be important to keep the negro down. And after you've seen Africa, you can stop whining and be grateful that slavery got you the hell out of Africa. Africans and Muslims invented slavery and unlike Whitey, they still haven't abolished it LOL

reply

Yeah it was bad back then and it still is that way in some parts of the United States but it has changed though. Now more society is accepting inter racial relationships where as before they were not because I can remember having a friend of mine being half black and half white. His mother from Belgium and his father from Mississippi. It was hard for them to live in a small town being the only african american family there in the 80's.

America is not that bad anymore?
I am the mother of two children that I adopted who just happen to be black. I am white and my husband and two other children are white.
We have gone out to eat and the wait staff is incredibly polite to the family until they get to my adopted children. They have been ignored without having their order taken, another time a server brought candy to the table after dinner but only two pieces. That was Arizona.
On a trip to Oregon we pulled our RV into a trailer camping area. We paid for three days there, which the owner accepted pleasantly. Then my adopted children got out. The man looks at them, frowns, and starts handing money back to my husband with the words "I want you out."
In Washington when my adopted daughter started Kindergarten her teacher told me how excited she was to finally have a "colored" student.
Right, America isn't that bad anymore. Live it and then say that.
Carbon Copy is one of my favorite movies. I think it portrays situations pretty accurately. It depends entirely on point of view and where you are in this life.

reply

I am sorry to hear that your two adoptive children are mistreated when you go to some places and restaurants. I understand that it all depends on where you go to and all but peoples views are starting to change though now. I mean where I live a lot more white women are dating more black men than ever before. I just thought that I would let you know about that. I hope that your kids are treated better now when you go to places.

This movie was pure comedic satire.
