Naive House Owner!

The woman who owned the house seemed to be
very naive by originally disregarding the
noises she heard in the basement. If you
hear any type of noise in a house that's
in the middle of nowhere then obviously
something's not right. She should have
called the sheriff's department and her
significant as soon as she got back up
the stairs. You don't know who or what
could be down there.

But then we wouldn't have the creepy first scene to establish that the basement will play an important part. Most of these movies always have an opening scene where the killer/monster offs some random person.

That answers your criticism: She knew the house was in the middle of nowhere and also searched the basement without discerning anything that would merit calling the police or leaving the house altogether. Shortly later she's shown in bed reading a book, which tells us that she wrote off whatever she heard as a mouse or the peculiar harmless noises an old house tends to make in the middle of the winter, e.g. water pipes, the furnace, whatever.
