Is this scene in this movie (spliced tape phone call)?

I'm trying to remember a movie I saw in either the late '80s or early '90s. It could have been a rental, or it could have been shown on a cable/premium channel. I don't remember much except what follows:

Two people—I *think* a man and a woman—splice together portions from a cassette tape to change what it says. Then they call someone and play the spliced tape, which now says something like, "This is Tony. I'm going to get you."

The person they called gets angry and starts yelling at them. He may have threatened them.

I don't think it was a comedy. It was probably drama or suspense.

Does anyone remember if that scene was in this movie?
