Vogon flying saucers.

Okay, I know this has been asked before, but I was wondering if someone could answer the question here; how come in the TV series they call the Vogon constructor fleet a fleet of flying saucers when they're clearly not?

Anyone?

reply

In history any ship belonging to a fleet could be refereed as the fleet.

Let Zygons Be Zygons.

reply

It's not the "fleet" thing that's bugging me.

It's the fact that they're not flying saucers.

reply

"Flying Saucers" was the name for UFOs before UFO became popular.

Kinda like people calling all vacum cleaners "Hoovers" even though they are not all made by Hoover.

When I heard the line "a fleet of flying saucers" many years later, It took me back to my schooldays in the 70s/80's and I thought "Oh yeah...we used to call UFOs flying saucers no matter what shape they were."

So not a goof or error....the language was correct for the time it was made/set.

I'm only half Troll....on my mothers side.

reply

Agreed. It's only a vague reference to an alien spaceship.

Flying saucers were called flying saucers because they were mostly "Seen" or more accurately "depicted" as flying disks in photos. Tossed hats, hub cabs (in most cases), or even actual saucers for cups were tossed in the air, photographed, and then published as UFO sightings.

Vogon ships are not round. They do not resemble anything round, much less saucers. 

And that's my big beef 

reply

That is very Dentlike - it's the sort of thing that bothered him, too

reply

But they did hang in the air, exactly the way bricks don't.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Great handle, Number Six :)

reply

... but ... they ... are ... NOT ... ROUND!!!

Further, they are NOT saucers!

They don't look like saucers, frisbees, aerobees, discusses, hub caps, hats, tires, inner tubes, or any OTHER round thing.

They are NOT SAUCERS!!!

Holy crap. I can't even imagine being that incapable of not taking things literally. Must be aggravating.
