Perhaps someone can tell me the appeal of this movie...

When it was originally released, I was dragged to see it by a girl that I liked. She thought it was the best film she had ever seen and being a 16 year old boy, thought it was laughable.

Fast forward a number of years and I saw it again because my then fiancee - who is now my wife of 22 years - made me watch it with her, as it is her favorite movie. I didn't laugh at it like I had as a teenager, but I found it incredibly boring.

I just don't get it. Why does this movie have so many fans?

I could spend all day trying to explain it, but basically, if you don't like it and don't get the appeal, you never will. And you're most not likely not a very sentimental, romantic person, so that's probably why you're not into it. It's just a feeling I get when I watch the film--I just love it. :)

I'm just glad it does have many fans. I like to know that there are other discriminating/discerning people out there who do recognize and appreciate such a great film.

It's definitely on the hokey side. But I really enjoy the filming location and watching Christopher Reeve in his prime.

First, you need to get a heart installed, followed by a shot of empathy to your brain, plus some imagination and romance. Then maybe you'll understand it and appreciate it. How does your wife stay married to you if you are so diametrically opposed in something so fundamental as feelings and romance?

reply

It is one of the most beautiful love stories ever. And it has Jane and Christopher in it. and the soundtrack/score and the location. So haunting and beautiful. And it has to do with time travel

Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!

You're right about the soundtrack, that's for sure. I'm a classical musician myself and tend to pay attention to scores in movies and TV shows. This was one of the most beautiful ever. 🎼

BTW, Poldark had a fabulous score, too, and I bought that soundtrack as well. Just sayin'...

Excellent! My brother is too. (Myself, I am a Rocker!) I will check out Poldark and you may love the soundtrack to Song of Bernadette. Probably one of THE best ever! I've always loved the music to Ben Hur and Stargate as well!!!

It does have a bit of a Twilight Zone feel to it because it was written by one of the Twilight Zone writers. In a strange way it's even based on a true story, not that Richard Matheson travelled back in time to meet Maude Adams, but he used his imagination to create that event.

You just don't like it.

But this film was a guaranteed kid's favorite when I was growing up. Every one in school gossiped about it. It was romance for the girls and science fiction for the guys.

reply

Oh, interesting! I know it's one romance that appeals to both men and women. I didn't know it would appeal so much to kids. Another romance that appeals to both sexes is Notting Hill, which I also loved. I've had guy friends mention how much they loved that movie. I'm going to see one of them tomorrow at a Christmas party. I'll have to ask him if he's seen SiT although it came out about the time he was born. LOL
