'Foul Play' has a higher average rating?? huh???

this movie is far superior to 'foul play' . i am so pissed. granted, the barry manilow song at the beginning is awesome, but overall, 'seems like old times' is so much better

I just wish Goldie and Chevy had made a 3rd movie together.

I like both FOUL PLAY and SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES.

Maybe SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES didn't do well at the box office. I can't recall how well it did back in '80.

I'm guessing not really well which was a damn shame. A funny, entertaining movie with a nice music score by Marvin Hamlisch.

Even tho 1980 wasn't that long ago it appears "modern" Hollywood can't make effective romantic comedies anymore. The chemistry is usually non-existent between the male and female leads (WEDDING PLANNER, anyone?) in many of these new-style romantic comedies.

Just a thought.

Just my $0.02 but, while I enjoy both Foul Play AND Seems Like Old Times, I've always felt Seems Like Old Times was the better film.

Dear doom: What do you think of the comparison between BEST FRIENDS with Goldie and Burt and SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES with Goldie and Chevy?

I'd give BEST FRIENDS **1/2 stars out of 4 -and-
SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES *** stars out of 4.

Interesting! I really liked Best Friends, but I think I liked Seems Like Old Times a bit more. I'd say maybe ***1/2 for Seems and *** for Best Friends.

Dear Doom: Ok. So how would you stack up IT'S MY TURN (1980) with Mssrs. Clayburgh and Douglas + Charles Grodin, too, compared to FOUL PLAY, BEST FRIENDS and SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES? This movie isn't on DVD -- but I've got the tape (I clearly remember paying $59.99 for it *Brand New* on Columbia Home Video and I thought it was a pretty good movie. And Diana Ross sings the title tune over the closing credits.

If you've not seen it yet check it out if you can -- though since it's not on DVD it may not be as easy.

Out of 4 stars for romantic comedies I'd give IT'S MY TURN ***1/2-out-of-****.

'til next time, doomster. -CG

Never saw It's My Turn, but I'll do my best to check it out, if possible. Thanks for the heads-up!

Ever see Kiss Me Goodbye with James Caan, James Bridges and Sally Field? Or, even better, Creator with Peter O'Toole? Good stuff!

Dear doom: Hi. I do own a VHS of KISS ME GOODBYE -- but I've yet to watch it.

Hope you can find a way to see IT'S MY TURN. You'd like it.

Hello, and Happy New Year, CG! I started mine by watching "Seems Like Old Times," which was a very pleasant though innocuous throwback to the screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s.

As for me, I prefer "Foul Play," if only for its excellent use of San Francisco locales. "Kiss Me Goodbye" is enjoyable as well, directed by the great Robert Mulligan of "To Kill a Mockingbird" fame, who passed away a few weeks ago. I love "Best Friends" with Burt and Goldie even more, and with the excellent "How Do You Keep the Music Playing" sung by Patti Austin and James Ingram. Another terrific film from that genre is "Starting Over," with Burt, Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen.

I'm still looking for a copy of "It's My Turn," which I saw on HBO about 30 years ago. I've had the soundtrack on vinyl for years, and I still take it out occasionally. Ain't no use in holding on, when nothing stays the same ...

Have a great new year with great old movies!

Dear WarpedRecord: Re >>> IT'S MY TURN (1980). That movie used to retail at $59.99 on Columbia Home Video. Columbia never dropped the price before the movie went out of print. It cost the full $60 + tax when I bought it *New* back in the '90s. I did have to Special Order it as well because the video retail store I bought it from didn't stock movies that were over $29.99. And even those $29.99 movies were few and far between.

Hello, Carter:

I see used copies of "It's My Turn" can be had on Amazon.com for as low as $7.99, plus $2.98 shipping. I'd order one, but I still suspect someday I'll come across it in a Goodwill or video clearance store for even less. Part of the joy in collecting old movies is the hunt, and even though I can find most of what I want on the Internet, it's more fun to come across rare titles when I least expect it. Sort of like "Candid Camera"!

I guess I'll be the opposing view. I love both movies but Foul Play is a personal fave for me. I was only like 8 when it came out, but something about the silliness of that film struck a chord with me (that secene with the Japanese in the limo??). That secene with Dudley Moore? C'mon - a classic!

Maybe it's be easier to separate the two as "silly comedy" and "more sophisticated comedy". Then they can both be tops.

reply

While I love both movies, I respectfully disagree. I think Foul Play is better...but it holds a special childhood nostalgia for me, maybe that's why. I also love the story...sort of Hitchcockian and so funny.

I'm with you on this one, in fact I was heading here to post the very same comment when I saw yours. This was a smart, funny comedy and IMO much better than Foul Play. It also surprises me to see that Foul Play has the higher rating. I think Chevy was funnier in this one ("If you're missing a quart of oil it's because I drank it.") and Goldie was charming, funny and sexy all at once. Also surprised to see that Charles Grodin was nominated for a Razzie that year. Really?? He wasn't bad...I've certainly seen worse.
