Raging Bullcrap

I watched 46 minutes of this and it is clear this film has nothing to say, not only that but it is a pretentious film based on the biography of a rather unlikeable man. How is this considered a classic?

reply

Well, I just watched the film for the first time- and I thought it was brilliant. Something about it just sucked me in and I couldn't stop watching- it was the exact opposite of boring for me (and this is coming from an 18 year old who is used to Hollywood throwing out brainless sh!t at my generation). De Niro was stellar and the direction was superb (haven't seen that much from Scorsese, regrettably). The fight scenes were slightly silly, but unforgivingly brutal (winced a lot when Jake was taking the beating from Sugar Ray) and I appreciated that- it was a reflection of Jake's character.

So yeah, completely disagree with the OP... though I didn't like it as much as the Rocky movies (but I've been a fan of them since I was a kid so they'll always have a place in my heart )

if you cant see why this is not a classic weather you like it or not then maybe you should not watch movies. or at least give any opinion of them.

To this day, this is the worst Scorceses film I've ever seen. Also the worst DeNiro movie I've ever seen. What I usually love about the pair is they paint DeNiro as the antagonist, but he plays with such a likability that you almost wish he wasn't a bad guy. (Cape Fear is my favorite example)

But Jake is an arrogant, neurotic, wife beater who you can never bring yourself to like or root for. It's a movie about a bad man who ruins his life and several others. Not that I hate unhappy endings or dark movies, but this movie was completely useless.

I seriously can't believe I just read this. Did you make it to "it's like a piece of charcoal, bring it ova"???

reply

Don't go in expecting Rocky and you should enjoy it.

It was a hard movie for me to watch. Some reason I prefer Goodfellas to this except for Joe Pesci in this movie. Just liked him better in this movie than in Goodfellas.

it's not a good movie! I was about to stop after 45 minutes too, but I made it till the end.

Vicky's and Jake's encounters were great, I admit. Vicky made me watch til the end.
And Joe Pesci's character was more likeable than De Niro's.
