Why this film is not on DVD... (reason #1?)

I think everyone knows that music was changed. The reason for the film still not being released is that the John Lennon song is on soundtrack. If someone is willing to pay Yoko Ono royalties, we may see this on DVD before 2010. If not, I highly doubt it until after she dies.

I don't think there are other problems, to be honest. If so, then they writers of those songs are shooting themselves in the feet. It's understandable about the former Beatles song. (And although Ferris Bueller contains "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles, they didn't write that song.

Geez.... because of a song ??
This was an amazing film that I wish to see again; and pass it on to my teenaged daughter.

Ok, that is stupid. No offense, but really stupid, how many Beatle, McCartney, and Lennon songs have been in movies over the years?! I really hope not that is not the true reason. I really hope so.

I really think the reason is because there are other things that are involved - such as, Paramount may or may not want to release the DVD, the filmmakers haven't been asked or don't want it, etc. A lot goes into getting a DVD released.

I really hope one of these days we will see a DVD release because its a true classic. It was like Sex And The City goes to sleepaway camp, before the book and even the series was even out. A truly great movie that deserves to be cherished always, now and forever...

Yeah. I think it had a VHS rerelease in the early 90s with different music. I got a used VHS of the original with Lennon's song on it, and I paid a pretty penny. But I absolutely love this film. I never saw it until it was on broadcast TV.

I bought a "pro copy" (original studio release) of the film on Beta format back in the early 80's that had the original music in the soundtrack. The broadcast version (on NBC) had the original music - including the Lennon song - plus some original musical scoring for the unused footage they added to the broadcast. So I don't think Yoko Ono's the reason Paramount hasn't released this film on DVD yet.

I got a dvd version from ioffer, it is PERFECT crystal clear widescreen including all original music! Also includes theatrical trailer. I dont know WHERE the maker of the dvd got it but its pure perfection! You would swear its an official widescreen dvd release soooooo worth the 18$ (invluded shipping) had no artwork or dvd case but eho cares i made my own on the comp. Again iHAVE NO IDEA WHERE THE SELLER GOT THIS but its FLAWLESS

Music is pretty valid reason that there are is no DVD releases. Why do you think there's still no release for The Wonder Years? This movie came out waaaaay before anyone even thought about royalties from DVD sales, so it's not such a dumb assumption.

A bootleg DVD. It is not an official DVD release.

Hi, I just got a DVD of this on Ebay. It is of VHS quality but on DVD. They also advertise them on sell.com

reply

I agree with the original poster.
I have a Japanese DVD of this film, and the Lennon song has indeed been replaced with an unknown, incredibly cheesy song.
Also, the song with the end credits has been changed.

My copy has "Let Your Love Flow" during the end credis. Where does "All My Love" usually play in the original?

"Honey, just cuz I talk slow doesn't mean I'm stupid." (Sweet Home Alabama)

Nevermind. I found it in the scene where Angel picks Randy up in the canoe the first time.

Just because a DVD is available on Ebay makes it an official release. Three of my favorite films have yet to make it to DVD, yet they continue to release crap and are trying to make everyone convert to Blu-ray.

The three films, just in case someone is interested is this film, Little Darlings, Bless the Beast and Children and Urgh! A Music War. I know you can watch all 3 on youtube, as long as they aren't taken down. But, they are all chopped up, in full frame and are not close to being DVD quality.

I just wish the studios would release the films we WANT to see on DVD and not make such big productions about movies which fail at the box office (and then eventually on DVD, too). Sure, they have to regain their production costs, but the three films I mentioned are pretty good, if not great.

I know Urgh's major problem is music rights, and I'm not completely sure about BBC. However, this movie should be on DVD with the original soundtrack. If that can't be done, why bother buying new DVD's? Last year, I "only" bought 5 new DVD's and have yet to purchase one in 2009. I have to admit that I bought Rowan Atkinson, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Personal Best (which took FOREVER to be released) and Sweeney Todd.

IMO, I'm boycotting Blu-ray until the studios can start releasing the movies that "I" want to see. The way I see it, my eyesight is not as good as it used to be, so why rebuy an entire collection of DVD's in a new format when eventually these will become obsolete because of a newer format??

And please don't tell me I'm missing out on some great movies. I've seen some of last years releases in the bargain bin at the store already. It's highly doubtful I'll purchase them, unless they are at the $5 price point.

However, I'll pay through the nose for a studio release of any of the three aforementioned movies. I know all are available on bootleg DVD, but an official studio release could end my boycott. My biggest question is "What are they waiting for?"

I say, pay off the music rights to the rightful owners and let's get the opportunity to see these movies on DVD.

As an older viewer with a limited budget, hundreds of DVDs, and vision problems, I'm with you. Let Blu-Ray go down in price, or become the Betamax of the 21st century. The quality was better with Betamax, but consumers rightly balked at being gouged for the players and the films. The consumers, NOT the studios, decided the standard.

There is a great version of this on ioffer.com in 16x9 anamorphic widescreen.

I'm just gonna sit tight, far as scouring sites for a bootlegged copy goes. If the remake is slotted for a 2011 release, I can wait another year, because then the original stands as good a chance as it ever has for a proper release vs. a pirated one.

Don't get me wrong. It's not some principled stand against piracy or vid bootlegging. I have no qualms about snagging an old vhs LD release and converting it to a dvd+r for home use. It's just that LD is far from the first old flick that has been out-of-print for years, wasn't upgraded to an official dvd release before whichever company owns the rights stopped ordering vhs copies of it to be manufactured, and subsequently has been way overvalued on various trading sites. I've gone down that road with Zapped!, Jekyl And Hyde Together Again, Slaughter High, They're Playing With Fire, Student Bodies and the like, where it looked like an official dvd release would NEVER see the light of day. So I, sucker that I am, went out and scooped up an old vhs tape via amazon or whatever, paid $20-$75 for it, made a dvd copy of it and within a couple of years saw it get an offical dvd release and sell for under $10 retail. And the offical dvd release was always of a better quality than my vhs-to-dvd dupe was anyway, thus I ended up beuying the offical dvd release as well. So I blew $30-$85 per title in purchasing, shipping and material costs to make a boot, when if I had just waited I could have had something better for a fraction of the price.

Personally, I hope whatever is holding up the LD dvd release doesn't have to do with music rights: cut the songs holding up dvd production out if need be. No, it's not thrilling when that happens (downright shame in the case of the Happy Birthday To Me dvd release), but LD wasn't a musical. I'll take a slightly altered music soundtrack over no LD dvd release at all. That's not a make-or-break point for me.

This is a bootleg. But if it's good quality, more power to you.

I have the VHS. It has the original songs, but there is one bit that is edited. It's near the end after the head counselor finds out about the bet. I remember after all the girls talk to the counselor, Cinder goes to the counselor (in a huff, I might add) to tell HER side of the story and the others are outside the door eavesdropping. For some reason that got cut out.

I hope all is restored for DVD someday. It's one of my favorites as Kristy is my age and Tatum is only a year younger.

Just wanted to let others know that there was a Laser Disc version of this movie released in 1982.
It is a Pan and scan version.

I hope that sometime the music rights that are holding up and potential DVD get resolved and we see a widescreen version with the deleted scences.

that doesnt make sense
Lennon would have already been paid for the royalties of his song in this movie.
they dont pay them over and over for a movie song unless its like a weekly tv theme show that is played with each new season.

purchased the VHS from Amazon. I doubt it will go on DVD. Good movie...

I watched Little Darlings just now (never seen it before) and was blown away! Wow, what a performance from Kristy McNichol. Great cast and script for a teen movie. Suprised to find it's not on DVD. What I'm wondering is, was this movie popular when it came out? Would a lot of people rush to get it on DVD or is it more of an obscure, for a limited audience kind of a film? I hadn't heard of it before, though I'm not American.

reply

I was a young (female) teenager when this movie came out, and I remember it as being absolutely HUGE. Not only were McNichol and O'Neal both big stars at the time - this movie was made largely as a star vehicle for the two of them - but the plotline about two young teenage girls in a bet to lose their virginity was nearly scandalous at the time. That's largely why it had an R rating, as I recall. Everyone wanted to (and probably did) see it; it was the talk of the season, as I recall. I haven't looked at box office figures, but among girls my age and slightly older, I know it was hugely popular.

The question of how many people would actually buy the DVD now is a different matter. I agree with many others that Kristy McNichol's acting in this film was stellar, and this is why this movie sticks in my mind after all these years while other similar movies from the same time period are long forgotten. But the movie IS from 1980, and many aspects of it are quite dated, not to mention, it's not terribly well made (McNichol's acting abilities aside). In fact, while I haven't seen it in years, I remember being largely unimpressed with Tatum O'Neal's performance in it even as a kid myself, finding her stiff, uninspired and largely forgettable. The romance between McNichol and Dillon's characters made this film (and Armand Assante's performance lent some class). The film does seem to have a lot of fans here, but these are people who have actively sought out this particular message board. I don't know how many other people would actually buy it, and hence, whether the releasing studio could make their money back. However, it is nice to hear that a whole new generation of fans are discovering this movie, and appreciating it on the merit of its own benefits. 

It is available for rent through iTunes, but not purchase.

This is the first time I have seen the movie (born in 83) so I do not know if anything is different in the iTunes version.
