Does anybody know why this is rated R?

Why is it rated R? IMDB doesn't list why.

Language and Brief Nudity (... Lemons)

One of the finest character-driven movies out there.

There's also some violence.

Only love, pads the film

Plus the cocaine aspect too.

LIFE WILL BE PEACHES AND CREAM

reply

Yes, brief nudity, cocaine and a smidgen of violence. Surely this would get a PG-13 today – I'm actually rather surprised it wasn't PG when it was released.

reply

I could see this getting an R more than Chinatown. I could see that one getting a PG-13 if it were released today as is.

All of the above plus a guy who deals in drugs and kills (murders?)two men gets away at the end. Morally ambiguous.

Alot of films receive the R rating just because of the themes/subject matter. a film glamorizing a criminal, amoral life might get the rating just for that.

There is a fairly gruesome knifing scene, it looked pretty raw and realistic.

Just in the opening minutes, there are several F-bombs by the husband after the car breaks down
