Saving the guns: an old, slightly morbid question finally answered...?

Being a Zulu War history buff Zulu Dawn is obviously well known to me and one sequence that has always aroused my curiosity (in slightly morbid fashion) was when the "guns", or cannons, attempted to escape Isandlawana - specifically the sequence where one detaches from it's limber as the artillery team lose control of the horses pulling it. Lieutenants Melville, Coghill and Vereker then jump over the overturned cannon in dramatic fashion directly after.

If you watch this sequence closely one of the gunners falls off as the team lose control and appears to go under one of the carriage wheels. Nasty....or was it a merely a dummy?

I've seen this film many times and always wondered this yet by chance just might finally have an answer after recently visiting noted authority on the war Ian Knight's website and reading an old post of his announcing ZD's then release onto Blu Ray:

Ian posted some rare photos from the film to accompany his article of deleted sequences, behind the scenes shots, etc and one showing a very concerned looking film crew looking over the aforementioned overturned gun with a caption that describes that an extra/gunner was tragically killed during that sequence....

The point is has someone's actual, tragic and untimely death been immortalised in the film all this time? If yes then I can't quite believe they left it in the final cut tbh....

Anyone heard anything different/contrary pertaining to this particular incident?
