Rocky's Trans Am
If this movie takes place just a few months after the original, which was set in 1976. Then how does Rocky have a 1979 Trans Am?

shareVery good observation on your part, I guess the movie crew didn't think of that.
shareWhich is strange considering that the '76 Trans Am looks almost completely the same except it has round lights.
shareThe second generation Trans Am (as its Chevy´s clone Camaro) laster from 1970 to 1981 whith minor changes during the years. The only major change could be the square headlaps from 1977 which lasted until 1981.
shareThe 1977 Trans Am had square lights. What he was buying was a 1977 Trans Am. Trouble is, he appeared to be buying the car about February. The new models wouldn't be out that early.
shareThe 1979-1981 Trans Am had a completly different front face from the 1977-1978 people. Take a good long look at them. But as far as movies go, they do this all the time with cars. I mean in Goodfellas it says on the screen that its 1963 and Ray Liotta is leaning against a 1965 Imapala. But so what? It doesn't detract from the story and neither should a 1979 Trans Am in Rocky II

You are absolutely right.
shareRocky struck me as an IROC-Z kind of guy. But that did not come out until 1985.
shareMany Philly Italians were driving Iroc's in the mid-late 80's.

Pontiac was on top of its marketing game in the late 1970's. We had Smokey and the Bandit, Part II, and Rocky II. I'm sure there are more, but if you wanted the hottest car in the USA at the time, you got a Trans Am. In '79 it was the fastest production car in the USA outside of an exotic. Even faster than a Corvette.
But it is an error in the film. Rocky should have been picking up a '76 Trans Am or maybe a '77 Trans Am depending on the time of year. It does appear like he's in an actual Pontiac dealership though during the car buying sequence, so it would have been hard to emulate putting in a whole plethora of '76 or '77 Pontiac models. It looks like a '79 LeMans that is parked in the showroom.
Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.
No, A trans am in 1979 was not faster than a Corvette
