Why did Drax draw attention to himself?

When Bond just starts investigating the theft of the aircraft he goes to visit Drax in California. Immediately Drax tries to have Bond killed, even though there was zero evidence he committed the hijack.

Why on earth did he do that? Even if he killed Bond it would only have drawn more attention to his plot. Seems like he should have just let Bond do the tour, point him in the wrong direction, and get to his space station ASAP.
