Actions of the locals

One thing that always puzzled me was the behavior of the locals at the gas station. Shooting stares at the wife. Professing ignorance as to where the beach was. Any explanations? Did they somehow know there was something "wrong" with the area?

I think it was the locals being wary of strangers. That's a feature of horror films a lot. The local was brought to the window to stare at them to see what was happening I think. Peter was banging on the jeep at the time.
