aren't any christians offended by this movie?

I am an atheist and I LMFAO while watching this movie. But the main reason for me to laugh this movie is that it showed christianism (not jesus maybe but certainly christians) as a bunch of sheeps who dont have any individual thinks.

So I think if I was a christian I would get pissed off. So didnt you?

Anyone that believes that the Planet is only 9000 years old or in a talking snake from the book of Jewish Fairy Tales should at least find this piece of funny fiction as any religion!

I'm Catholic and I loved this movie.

I'm a Christian, and I wasn't at all offended by it, but I do find it largely inferior to its predecessor The Holy Grail.

Oh yes they are - dial YouTube and check out a talk show from 1979 where two smug, condescending douchebag bishops kept droning on and on how LOB is both blasphemous as well as a "tenth rate farce". I was kinda impressed how well Cleese and Palin kept their calm listening to that bullsh-t while also getting in an occasional funny jab at the pompous bastards.

No, because God and Jesus aren't mocked at. In fact, the latter is portrayed as a holy being. The movie only makes fun of certain aspects of religion.

I'm not a Christian and I'm not an Atheist, I'm an Agnostic, but I wouldn't think that Christians would be offended by it because it's not offensive. The movie pokes fun at some parts of the story of Christ but it never flat out insults it. It seems to be done in a way that still shows respect for the actual story, it also helps that the story isn't about Jesus it's just about some random guy, Brian, who accidentally gets mistaken for being the messiah. At no point do they actually insult or mock Jesus or Christians, they just tease a bit. Obviously there might be some extremists that get offended by it without watching it and complain but I'd say the majority probably doesn't have a problem with it.

I remember being in church and the priest was going on about how disgraceful the film was - he was an alcoholic, Irish loon! We all looked along the pew and winked at each other. On the way back home, we all decided it would be worth a family trip!
We cried with laughter from start to finish.

In short, there are lots of Christians who are offended by this film. But, there'll be more who can quote you every line.

Blessed are the cheese-makers!

Just skimming through the thread, it's heartening to see the Hipster Atheists out in force.

I was brought up a Catholic in Ireland, but lapsed somewhat as I got older - or rather I realised that the Bible wasn't to be taken word-for-word literally. Although I don't believe in (snigger, you Hipsters crack me up!) "an old man in the sky", an "imaginary friend" (oh, Mr Gervais, you're so cool! Hah, you even put down the "mongs", well done!) or the "Jewish book of fairy tales", I believe that the Catholic faith has left me with a great moral compass, and a real sense of right and wrong. I have passed this on to my children, none of whom have ever been touched by religion in their lives, and I couldn't be prouder of what kind, humane people they are.

I know the default reaction now will be "Child abuse!" Yes, I know, a minority of priests committed horrible atrocities and a lot of senior officials covered it up. Unforgiveable, and everything that the Catholic faith preaches against.

The cool crowd sniggering into their Frappacinos should have been around in Ireland in the Sixties and Seventies and tried some of their smart-ass crap, without the media and celebrities to back them up. Or, and I know it's a cliche, but I don't care, they should fetch up in Islamabad town square and start sneering about the man in the sky (think of the material they'd have with Mohamed and his predilection for young girls!)

Come on Hipsters, let's see what you're made of.

Do you include yourself in that group? Why do people hate hipsters so much?

As for Islam, some friends and I were stopped from photographing a military installation in the Western Sahara by a Muslim soldier. Then he invited us into the base for mint tea and asked us whether the "Satanic Verses" was really anti-Muslim, and whether we would permit the publication of a story mocking Christ or the Virgin Mary in the West: I answered yes, yes and yes, giving him six blasphemous novels off the top of my head.

The soldier was surprised, but very civil. We moved onto some other subjects and he was calm, amusing and just a nice bloke in general.
