GREAT MOVIE....stupid ending?

was it just me or was the ending on this movie to fast to actually show the sacrifice the dad made?
I mean, I didnt even notice the reason the dad died was because he didnt want his plane to crash into the city until sometime after the movie...
but that just my opinion

I thought they made it clear enough as to why he stayed with the plane and decided not to eject, when he came out of the clouds and saw the lights of the city below him and said, "Negative! I'm over the town!" in reply to the Air Traffic Controller recommending he eject. But then again, in all fairness I used to fly F-4s myself (in the Air Force) and had also read the book before the movie came out, so I may have had a much better understanding of what was happening in the scene than the average civilian would.

Just noticed the above post, otherwise I would have replied sooner.

It's highly unlikely that an F-4 would stay on autopilot after the crew ejects. The autopilot is designed to come off automatically if there is any pressure on the stick, which would almost certainly happen from the blast of the ejection seat rocket.

What "Auto Pilot"?

F-4 Phantoms. F-105 Thuds (Thunder Chiefs), Navy F-8s (Which were the actual aircraft assigned to Meechum' s wing in the novel) A-3s and 4s. And later AF A-7s. Basically all fighter/fighter bomber during Vietnam and the 1960s did not have room or Avionics for such a luxury.

You, (Or your back seater) drove the aircraft from Take Off to Touch Down.

I like you, Kane. You're normal!... The Ninth Configuration

He didn't have time to eject. The airplane exploded in flight as he was maneuvering it away from the city. That's my take any way. That's why the tower didn't see any fire.

JMHO.

it was needlessly melodramatic.

Season's Greetings!

I was hoping he could point the plane toward the ocean and its momentum would carry it to where it could splash harmlessly, allowing him to punch out over land. Oh well, I guess not.
