Network TV version - where to buy it?

Hi there,

I am looking to obtain a copy of the extended TV network version of Beyond...

Can anyone recommend any websites, sellers or collectors that would be able to help me in my hunt?

I'm also interested in obtaining other hard-to-find cuts of films too (such as The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, etc.).

Many thanks

Yes, I am curious about the "extended" Poseidon.

I once knew a guy in New York who saw it decades ago.

Can someone put it on YouTube please?

Maybe this is an Hollywood urban myth? I've never heard about a version with extra scenes for TV. I know that the 1976 version of King Kong had extra footage when it was broadcast on NBC, but it was limited to Kong just meandering through the jungle.

No myth...the guy who told me about this never tells BS.

Irwin Allen originally wanted BEYOND to be as big, and as long, as BEN-HUR, but when test screenings were made he was told to CUT, CUT, CUT away!

The missing footage expands the sub-plots of the less important supporting cast of the film.

Wow, thanks for the anecdote. Now I am really intrigued! I'd love to get my hands on the longer version as well since I am a die-hard POSEIDON fanatic.

I remember the added footage quite vividly for the Network TV version:

There was a backstory as to why Peter Boyle and Angela Cartwright were even on the trip in the first place. She had gotten herself pregnant and they were "getting away from it all" for a little trip. That explains why he was so hostile to Mark Harmon's character.

Harold Meredith (Jack Warden) was a very famous novelist who wrote with the help of his wife, Hannah (Shirley Knight). Nurse Gina (Shirley Jones) was a huge fan of Harold's novels and there was much more intereaction between these three. In fact, it seemed like there was a romance blossoming between Gina and Harold as the story came to a close.

That's all I remember. Sort of interesting but added nothing to the movie.

It's a shame the movie was done on the cheap. Those exterior shots of the ship were just HORRIBLE!

Yeah there IS an extended version of "Beyond..." but it might never see the light of day. They just rereleased it on DVD and (I believe) Blu-Ray and it's the theatrical version. You would think by now they'd get it out. Maybe it's being held by Irwin Allen's estate and they won't release it for some reason.

I got the extended Earthquake, airport 77 and beyond the Poseidon adventure from the gentleman on youtube at this address. They are very good. He is very reasonable. [email protected]

How much did they cost?

The thing is: The movie played like a TV movie, in the first place. So, the TV version was a very natural progression. :-)
