Question about Sarah's mother?? Please explain.. (SPOILERS)

SPOILERS BELOW!!!

In the film, Mrs. Hunter (Shelly Winters) talks to Sarah about her mother. She knew Sarah's real father and seemed to dislike him.

Was it being implied that Mrs. Hunter is actually Sarah's biological mother???

It seemed like the filmakers wanted to go somewhere with that storyline, but it was just confusing to me.

What does everyone think????

I need a better copy of the movie.

My copy is so bad.

I really need to see the movie again in order to answer the question.

Mrs. Hunter, Sarah and Patti's father, and Jennifer's mother were all in college together. Sara and Patti's father, PAtrick Goodwin, was a fraternity boy and Big Man on Campus during the time. Jennifer's mom was an Alpha Nu Sigma, while Mrs. Hunter was Phi Epsilon Delta. It was explained with Mrs. Hunter hated Jennifer. It was Jennifer's mom who claimed that Mrs. Hunter caused the death of a PED pledge.

how does that answer the question...
lol
???
the question was DID THE MOVIE EVER REVEAL WHO SARAH'S ACTUAL MOTHER IS?
cause to me it seemed to be leaning towards Mrs.Hunter...

I think they were implying that Sarah was Mrs. Hunter's illegitimate child, either that or she was an illegitimate child of one of the other women at Mrs. Hunter's sorority.

This whole movie felt cut. Like there may have been more either filmed or in the script that we never got to know.

I also believe it was Mrs. Hunter who was Sarah's biological mom. I thought that Sarah was the lovely love baby of Patrick Goodwin and Mrs. Hunter. Mrs. Hunter mentions how pretty Sarah has turned out to be. It struck me that she had access to her background to know she's lucky and gifted. Also, her mention of a stigma for having a love baby made me think that she had either gone through it directly or vicariously.

In a way, it might make sense. Mrs. Hunter disappeared after the pledge's murder was ruled a suicide. She got herself married, then reappeared at her alma mater as a form of revenge. She believed she could do it again and get away with it when the time was right. With Sarah by her side, she could avenge herself by murdering Jennifer, the daughter of the woman who Mrs. Hunter had hated for so long.

It felt cut to me, too. I would love to see deleted footage from this and CARRIE. They are two of my favorite films. I have such a soft spot for both Sarah and Carrie. Imagine what they could have pulled off if they had teamed together! There would be a whole generation without any living high schoolers and college kids!

I also thought it odd that Sarah didn't catch on to anything when Mrs. Hunter makes that comment "What a lovely young woman you've turned out to be."
That's something someone says to a person they've SEEN before, watch grow up.
Not someone you've just met.

Excellent point. Thank you.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was initially supposed to be some sort of subplot about this but it got dropped somewhere along the way. Here are my two theories:

1. Hunter is Sarah's mother and gave her up for adoption because of the social stigma. She pushed her on to Sarah's father, who ended up marrying Patty's mom. Because he didn't try to push her into marriage and because she accidentally killed the unnamed woman, Hunter went insane and believed that her magic rituals were all real.

2. The unnamed person who died during the initiation is Sarah's mother. Hunter deliberately killed her out of jealousy because this woman was in a relationship with Sarah's father and was pregnant by him. This is too much for Hunter to take, so she killed her in the guise of it being a Paganistic ritual. When Sarah appears, Hunter is fascinated with her because she is still clearly obsessed with her father. During this time Hunter began to partially claim some of the dead woman's accomplishments as her own, such as getting the date and being crowned. Also at some point over the years Hunter's own insanity began to bleed into the rituals and occult things she studied to where she believes that they're all true and that Sarah is a sign that everything she did was justified.

The first rationale (Hunter as mother) would be easier and less convoluted, but I somewhat favor the second one because it's more lurid and would fit in with the film's drama llama nature somewhat. Part of what might help fuel the second scenario is that the remake made the unnamed woman into Sarah's mother, so I can't help but wonder if that wasn't an initial theory that they decided to add into the remake.

But the first one would be interesting as well, since it'd make things more tragic as Sarah's bio mom would be completely crazy.

I thought the movie was implying that Erica Hunter was Sarah's mother, as chronicled by DrmWmn below.

The second theory is an interesting possibility to consider, but this reasoning to support it is weak since the remake radically revamped practically everything beyond the basic set-up.

My take on it is this:

Mrs. Hunter is Sarah's mother. Patty's parents and Mrs. Hunter all went to college together. I think Patty's dad had a thing with Mrs. Hunter, resulting in her getting pregnant with Sarah.

Patty's dad chose to marry Patty's mom. Instead of paying child support, or maybe because Mrs. Hunter was putting Sarah up for adoption, Patty's dad took her in. Patty's mother obviously didn't care for her the way she cared for her own daughter, Patty. I think it's because she was slighted that lead to her shyness. Patty's mom is the type of woman that had she taken an interest in Sarah, Sarah would've dressed nicer and been a catch like Patty. Patty obviously inherited her power from her mother, Mrs. Harris.

As for he girl whose death Mrs. Harris caused, this could've been a girl who was bullying her, much like Jennifer (Morgan Fairchild) was bulling Sarah.
