Why is this movie considered a classic?

I've watched this movie twice now, and I can't seem to find anything that suggests this movie deserves a place amongst the horror classics. Can this movie even be considered in the horror genre honestly??

What an ablsolute waste of time this movie was!

Then why waste Ur time posting bout it? I hate Blair Witch Project but I don't go that board & tell them about it.

Look at all the horror films that came out after Halloween, it was either inspired or ripped-off - Besides Psycho, I never seen another film that had such a influence for new filmmakers to make their own horror films...

Trust me when I watch a Halloween film as a filmmaker point of view - The framing, the shots, the cinematography, the music & the steadicam - I wish I was directing this movie...

Well I can't say I agree with you that it's a waste of time, but here's why I think it's a classic:

-Nearly flawless tension and suspense
-Realistic performances
-Creepy and atmospheric soundtrack
-Clever camera-work
-Subtle for the most part
-Didn't have to rely on endless gore

So if you hate it, that's alright and I respect your opinion but I personally put it in my top 10 horror movies of all time.

its in my top ten along with Scream, SAW, F13th, The Blair Witch Project and i think its a classic.

newer generations of horror fans may not like it but that happens with lots of movies in other genres to.

i'm sure people liked horror movies from the 40's and 50's back in the old days but i'm not into them

reply

I see where you're coming from, but can Scream, SAW and Halloween really be classified as horror films? I mean, they're slashers but they don't exactly fit the horror genre, do they?

Uh, yeah.

Horror is a genre, slasher is a sub-genre.

Slasher movies are a sub-genre of horror.

Exactly. Just like creature feature, found footage, etc. There are plenty of sub-genres especially after 50+ years. Can't all fit under the exact same thing any more.

What would you classify the film as, OP? Comedy? Drama? Lol.

X-Men: Apocalypse 8/10. TMNT: Out of the Shadows 9/10. RIP Doris Roberts. You were wonderful in ELR.

reply

i would think they are.

how is the horror genre defined?

slashers are a sub genre but i think almost any horror movie fits into a sub genre

How are slashers not included in horror?

And the film is great!
I've been re-watching many horror classics recently -
Halloween still stands with the best of them.

Definitely, Hal.

RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

Because you weren't like seven or eight back when it FIRST came out. Specifically for me on cable. We had NEVER seen anything like this, and it truly scared the poop out of us. I've been an old school horror fan for life. Started with the Universal classics, to Night of the Living Dead and everything else after. This film is historic in every sense. You young guys think films like this and The Exorcist aren't scary, but stupid. It is because you are already presented with the worst of the worst every day. You're numb to it. The news. Video games and rap "music" have dumbed down a generation that should look at this film in awe. Sad but 100% truth. You young guys don't appreciate what it takes to make a film either. I'm a professional one, so I KNOW the genius of Carpenter's mind and beautifully grotesque visions. I truly feel sorry for your generation.

well said deleted... take a look at the films John Carpenter has directed written or been involved in... he really is one of the most talented guys ever. Would be so cool to meet him...
And yeah, like you said, seeing this kind of movie back when I first saw it in the 80s, it was original, one of its kind, as were most of Carpenters movies, the fog, big trouble in little china, the thing... all amazing movies... but if I was a kid watching those nowadays, they would be lost in a mass of junk movies and TV... probably watched on a laptop... so its no wonder that teens/people in their 20s just don't get it...

Your life is a waste of time and I'm sure your mom regrets not aborting you every day of her life. This movie is a masterpiece. bow down and ask for forgiveness.

Little harsh, especially with a name like Bishop, but the movie is a classic.
