And the Golden Globe goes to...

Richard Chamberlain and his hideous accent? Conrad's performance was electric and would have been far more deserving, IMHO.

I agree. Before watching Centennial I had never realized what a great actor Robert Conrad really was. And I also agree that his performance vastly outshone the one by Richard Chamberlain who was at that time pretty much the king of the made for television classic movies and mini-series.

Chamberlain's being seen as US television's resident 'Serious Actor', as a result of his having spent a considerable amount of time in England post-Kildare doing stage and Shakespeare, is what probably influenced his win. But frankly, I never thought he was that great of an actor myself--the British experience just seemed to make him pretentious and stiff as a performer, and there were certainly other Centennial cast members who deserved the award more.

Maybe it was Conrad’s accent. It was dire! Probably the worst Quebecois or French accent I have ever heard. So painful!

It has to rank as one of the worst accents in an acting performance— right up there with Dick Van Dyke’s cockney in Mary Poppins.
