Can someone fill me in on

Some quick history. Movie confuses me a bit because Bond who is a British agent a part of the Allie power, teams up with a Soviet woman. We're they able to do this because after WW2, both were Allie powers? As far as I remember Russia was only against UK when Russia was a axis power in WW1 aka against the allies. Still, even if both country's were on the same side at the time the movie came out, can they (bond and the girl), or 2 other people from the countries, communicate like that?
