Best and Worst Bonds by Decade

60's: Goldfinger, OHMSS
70's: TSWLM, Moonraker (pretty good action though)
80's: LTK, Octopussy
90's: Goldeneye, TWINE (still awesome)
00's: DAD, CR (I hope the new one's better)

reply

You like Die Another Day? That's the worst Bond movie so far in my opinion, and I thought Tomorrow Never Dies was much worse than The World Is Not Enough.

Can I ask you, WHAT EXACTLY IS IT ABOUT ALL THE BROSNANS THAT EVERYONE HATES SO MUCH????? Please use specifics.

reply

[deleted]

Craig only has one.

reply

[deleted]

I agree with you there. Craig was good in Casino Royale. QOS was just awful all around.

Still I would take Brosnan over Craig any day.

reply

[deleted]

Probably his lack of any standout qualities, other than his looks.

He lacked the toughness and intensity of Connery or Dalton, and while the same could be said of Moore, Brosnan only had a portion of the wittiness and charm Moore had.

I would best describe Brosnan as a competent, but undistinguished/unmemorable Bond.

My thoughts exactly

60's:From Russia With Love- You Only Live Twice
70's:The Spy Who Loved Me- The Man With The Golden Gun
80's:The Living Daylights- A View To A Kill (Although I liked all the Bond films of the 80s)
90's:Goldeneye- Tommorow Never Dies
2000's:Casino Royale- Die Another Day(Worst Bond film period)

I pretty much agree with this, except I'd say worst sixties bond was Thunderball and worst 70's being Moonraker.

Reason why I don't like Brosnan bond films is because he brought back too many memories of Roger Moore, the writing for the most part was of a poor standard and finally, if you look either side of Brosnan you'll see two actors trying to portray the man as a deadly efficient killer instead of a smarmy playboy.

I'm sorry, I just don't understand what that mean. "Two actors"? Do you mean Brosnan and Moore, or do you mean two sides of Brosnan? Are you saying it's best to be a "swarmy playboy" or a "deadly efficient killer"?

"...nothing is left of me, each time I see her..." - Catullus

reply

i think he means the two actors potraying Bond before and after Brosnan did. That would be Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig were the "deadly efficient killers" and Brosnan the "smarmy playboy." I like Brosnan as Bond, but yeah he reminds me a little to much of Moore.

reply

Nice one! Right on the money!

60's: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (best) - Dr. No (worst, but still okay)
70's: The Spy Who Loved Me (best) - Moonraker (worst)
80's: For Your Eyes Only (best) - Octopussy (worst)
90's: The World Is Not Enough (best) - Tomorrow Never Dies (worst)
00's: Casino Royale (best of the best) - Die Another Day (worst of the worst)

reply

I'm close to Advocatus - with two exceptions:

I'd rank Diamonds Are Forever the worst of the 1970s.

I'd say On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the strongest of all the Bonds - I was deeply moved by the relationship with Diana Rigg, easily the best of all the Bond Girls. Lazenby is sometimes a little awkward - but perhaps the very best at fistfights and the romance with Rigg is really great. I'd love to see more romance in Bond movies. Of course, they'd have to figure out a way to disentangle at the end of the films, because I agree with starting with a clean romantic slate at the beginning of each movie.

People really underrate several Roger Moore Bonds - the truth is that You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only are really excellent James Bond movies - extraordinary action scenes, genuinely exotic locations, interesting plots, great music, fine acting all around - and perhaps most of all it's VERY easy to genuinely like James Bond in these - there's a warmth to the movies that we don't see in the Dalton and Craig Bonds.

I am not against the Dalton-Craig tough Bonds in principle - but they're more pure, icey, hard - the Roger Moore Bonds really do give you a wonderful glow of warmth - and that's a great feeling after the movie. It's wrong to underestimate it - ot comes from just how warm/genuinely good a person Roger Moore is as this James Bond.

reply

You Only Live Twice is Sean Connery, not Roger Moore. Have you really watched these movies?

I won't say "best" or "worst" in all cases, but I definitely have faves and least fave

FAVE LEAST
60s Thunderball You Only Live Twice
70s The Spy Who Loved Me Diamonds Are Forever (ICK!!)
80s For Your Eyes Only A View To A Kill
90s The World Is Not Enough Eh - I was pretty indifferent
00s Casino Royale Die Another Day (frustrating)

60's: Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever
70's: Live and Let Die, Moonraker
80's: License to Kill, A View to A Kill
90's: Goldeneye, The World is Not Enough
00's: Quantum of Solace (just), Die Another Day.

It is my opinion that the worst 3 Bond films are Diamonds Are Forever, A View to a Kill, and Die Another Day. On Her Majesty's is simple...I will never think much of Lazenby as a Bond, so I don't really rate it...apart from that, it ranges from one's i can happily watch (Moonraker) to simply great films (From Russia, Spy Who Loved Me).

In my opinion Casino Royale and Quantum are both different but both excellent films.

Casino Royale is my favorite.

I am amazed at how drastically-different opinions can be from what you would perceive them to be! I have always believed Octopussy to be one of the BEST Bond films, but of course it's just one of my favorites. It is incredible to see how disliked and widely panned it is in the Bond community! I can certainly see it's flaws, but to think of how well Louis Jourdan played Kamal Khan, and with Maud Adam's return...but, such is life! And I completely agree with an earlier post that The Man With the Golden Gun is one of the most underrated. But to see that more people did not list Live and Let Die as one of the worst...Kananga exploding like a balloon, without a trace of blood, flesh, bones...? Give it the prize for Solitaire and TeeHee/Whisper, but that's about it.

60's
BEST: Goldfinger
WORST: You Only Live Twice

70's
BEST: The Spy Who Loved Me
WORST: Live and Let Die

80's
BEST: For Your Eyes Only
WORST: License to Kill

90's
BEST: GoldenEye
WORST: The World is Not Enough

It's too early to say for the 2000's flicks, but Casino Royale far surpasses Die Another Day in all categories.

00's: Casino Royale, Die Another Day (Worst Bond film ever)

reply

60's: Thunderball (great score and finale); OHMSS (although I loved the storyline)
70's: Moonraker (action takes place all over, even space); TMWTGG (weak villain)
80's: Living Daylights (Dalton at his best and my favourite Bond girl) & The spy who loved me (classic); A view to a kill (Not Bond-like at all, great opening title and villain, the rest if just completely off)
90's: Goldeneye (inquestionably); TND (Bond girl?)
00's: Here there's some consensus - Casino Royale, one of the best of the series (maybe the best even); DAD, terrible, pointless action

Now, Thunderball made a huge impression on me, as it was the first I haver saw, and the music and underwater scenes are delightful...and the Bond girls are top drawer, but I also loved the others.

90's: TWINE (but honestly I like all three 90's Bonds)
00's: Die Another Day (Although the more I think about Quantum of Solace, the more it slips down my list, not because it was bad, but because of how unbondlike it was.)
