Best song in the movie

For me it`s More than a woman (by Tavares not the Bee Gees)

reply

I agree... The Bee Gees had some great songs, but Tavares has em beat on this one.

A great what-if.....if the Beatles had a chance to get in a "disco" song in the film. Now that's a genre that they never got into. Guess they weren't dancers!..;-)...

reply

Don't think that would have been possible. The Beatles had separated at least 4 years before Disco hit.
Interesting note, in 1975 John Lennon appeared on NBC's late night talk show Tomorrow with Tom Snyder they were talking about the current music at the time, John Lennon said he liked "the disco music that's out now...." but this was early in the Disco movement in 1975. Here's the YouTube link to that interview (pt.2 in the series @ 4:30 into the video)

thx..pretty good interview from John..he was talkative. I'm not surprised he would say that about disco. Lennon, to my mind, was pretty much open to alot of music. And he hit it right with reggae.

reply

Yep, if you look at the selection of songs he had on his portable juke-box, there was a lot of Motown type stuff. I bet the disco music he appreciated was kind of a continuation from the Motown type stuff, song's like Patti LaBelle's Lady Marmalade or Never Can Say Goodbye by Gloria Gaynor.

Now way man, the Beatles had some great songs, but are overrated imo. I don't think they would do justice to a disco song.

Like when I listen to Say Say Say from Paul McCartney en Michael Jackson, imo Paul did good, but he did not really have ''disco soul''. You here him sing first and I think ''he sounds'' good and the Michael starts singing and he just sounds like WOW.

reply

You could be right. Your example maybe backs up the theory that white boys can't do disco!...;-)...

Beatles overrated, eh? They were kind of a big group I'd say. Pretty influential. Had good tunes, melodies, instrumentation. Always pushing the envelope with each record they put out. Changed the face of popular music.
Had some clunkers but all in all, a definitve group for our musical century.
I think they'll always be "classic" just like Beethoven and Mozart...

reply

The Beatles were not just "pretty" influential they were infinitely influential. Everything about popular music changed after they came along. Even the likes of Frank Sinatra, who was a notorious hater of rock'n'roll music, went on to say that George Harrison's "Something" was probably the finest love song ever written. Those people who underestimate the importance of the Beatles, like amsterdamgirl, simply don't know their history. They don't know that the pop music of today wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the Beatles. Now, some might say that this is not exactly a good thing, that the Beatles made rock music "safe" because EVERYBODY, people of all ages, like parents and even grandparents, ended up loving the Beatles and their music. Paul McCartney, in fact, is still, to this day, the most popular and successful artist of all time, having sold more records -- as a Beatle, with Wings, and a solo act -- than any other artists or band, and this includes Michael Jackson or Madonna. But love 'em or hate 'em, they changed the world in all kinds of ways.

Now, as for white boys not being able to do disco, I think one of the finest disco acts ever has been KC & The Sunshine Band, the core of which were white guys. They were an early disco act that just happened to be an actual band of very tight and talented musicians. The backlash against disco came later in the 70s, when producers were using drum machines and canned sounds to produce tracks that all started to sound alike. This is why, as another poster here pointed out, in 1974 John Lennon said that he liked much of the disco music coming out at the time. Disco was new, but at the same time it was largely an off-shoot of soul and R & B music, and it was being played by REAL musicians.

Anyway, just thought I'd put in my two cents. I checked into this forum because HBO is currently playing "Saturday Night Fever", a film I haven't seen in forever!

If white boys can't do disco, then what about Travolta & the Bee Gees? o_O

The knack to flying lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

reply

Paul had "DON'T SAY GOODNIGHT" and John had "WHATEVER GETS THROUGH THE NIGHT" in the 70s'.

reply

The Bee Gees wrote the song. And NOBODY beats the Bee Gees with their own songs.

reply

No, Yvonne Elliman's version of If I Can't Have You is better than the BeeGees version, even the BeeGee's admitted it.

"How Deep Is Your Love" for me! Whenever I hear this song, I always think of Tony taking the train after that horrific/tragic night and going to Stephanie's house with the sun just coming up. I've always loved The Bee Gee's though and "How Deep Is Your Love" has always been a favorite of mine. Great song.

Can't agree there. The Bee Gees version is better without a doubt. Just thinking back to the famous white dance suit scene. It's got the Tavares version beat hands down though that's great. It's between this song, Stayin' Alive and Night Fever.

Disco duck wasn't in SNF. But I'd like to hear how the BeeGees would cover that!

reply

Actually Disco Duck IS in Saturday Night Fever, it wasn't included in the soundtrack double album much to the disappointment of Ricky Dees but the song was and still is included in the film.

Disco Duck was playing when the studio owner was giving disco lessons to that group of seniors.

I agree

Also 'You Should Be Dancing'.

reply

"You Should Be Dancin'" seconded. Travolta's solo dance is the business (this coming from a metalhead).
