When the guards ask Dennis, "stop, show us your legs to stop", then they look at each other and shake their heads and say "no", what are they looking for? Could never figure that one out. I thought maybe they were looking for signs of the plague.
shareI always took it as the guards would have let Dennis into the city if they thought he had nice legs.
But they obviously didn't like them enough and so said "no!"
In the audio commentary on the DVD, during that scene Terry Gilliam just giggles and says 'not good enough', which seems to confirm the idea of the guards thinking Dennis simply did not have good enough legs!
So it was just a silly joke and nothing to do with plague etc :)
I din't get that either, if they would have been looking for signs of the plague they would have let him in since he was clean.
