I love this movie.

I first watched it on BBC in 2004, I just watched it again and it's just beautiful. The locations they shot at, the story it all fits toghetter nicely. Highly recommended!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. There are many deep thinking people who feel the same way. Highlights include David Hemmings (Rummy), Scott and the young actor that played David. (What ever happend to him?) I think George C. Scott was the best Hemmingway protagonist to ever act in one of hs film adaptations.

It was also nice to see Hart Bochner in his first movie, way before he played sleazy, coked-up "Ellis" in "Die Hard".

I liked it except the ending was contrived and not a thing like the book.

Sorry, I should have said the last THIRD of the movie was contrived. The ''At Sea' part. Ruined it for me. Read the book instead.

I agree the first section alone is masterful in every way. I suppose fathers of sons in particular- I can't think of a more beautiful and truthful depiction of a father's relationship with his sons.

I think it's criminal that the film gets a rating of 6.3. It ought to be a lot higher. Just the gorgeous cinematography alone of the ocean and the beautiful exotic locations is great. Also, the film is very rich with poignant and painful aspects of life like regrets, love, and growing up. It's a character study and the dynamics of several relationships are explored in great depths.

My parents had this on VHS when I was a kid and I ended up watching it often, mostly for the shark attack and the shootout. Now older, I appreciate it for the life lessons layered into its story. It really is a great film unknown to many, so I hope readers of this will give it a chance.
