Excellent

I saw this film when I was teenager.
I've seen a lot of great filma since that.
But this one is still MY FAVORITE FILM.
It's very individual. Maybe The Family of Scola is better, but I don't think so.
It's real cinema. BRAVO

Difficult to decide Scola's best film between this one and 'Una Giornata particolare'.

Right on, Dabulash ! C'eravamo tanto amati is a genuine miracle of human expression at the movies, and certainly one of the best movies ever made. Yet critics and intellectuals will never surrender to it, for at least four reasons : 1) because it is a comedy 2) because emotion is favoured over the intellect 3) because its goal is to obtain a maximum of narrative fluidity rather than aesthetic statement, so that all cinematic work, however flawless, is always submitted to the demands of storytelling and humour and not the other way around 4) because film critics and intellectuals are being laughed at ! (through the hilarious character of Nicola, one of the three friends played with surprising bravado by Stefano Satta Flores).

Also my candidate for best screenplay in movie history (Age-Scarpelli-Scola), best actors in movie history (Nino Manfredi ! Vittorio Gassman ! Stefania Sandrelli ! Wow !) and best editing (must be Nino Baragli, or if not, Ruggero Mastroianni). The "fade-out" ending with the Fiat 500 on the endless road and the endless dispute between Nicola and Antonio makes my heart spring out of my chest every time I watch this miraculous tragicomic popular satire.

Of the three movies mentioned
I think
Una Giornata Particolare is Scola's best.

Followed by BSC and CTA.

I'd have a really hard time chosing between Una giornata partocolare and C'eravamo tanto amati; fortunately I don't have to, I keep them both very close to my heart.

I agree! What a masterpiece! Consider when this film was made and it's amazing how 'modern' it is. The scene with Elide in the car, elevated above her husband, is fantastic. What a genius Scola was - in every scene.
