Boring. Was it ever considered scary?

There seemed to be long periods where nothing happened. And the English accents did my head in

PROPAGANDA - Duel

Very scary in the '70s following The Exorcist and Jaws. The shocking beginning, the Rottweiler, the spooky kid, the terrific score, the decapitation. All this before a thousand other movies came along and we got used to seeing it all.

The OP might want to consider that, back in 1976, our society was much more vulnerable to the sensation that God might be dead, the stars align, and chaos was inevitable.

This movie is a masterpiece of suspence and horror and YES, was considered quite horrifying. It still is. The older I get, the scarier it seems to be. Maturity can work against you like that.

reply

Still scary now if you're not totally desensitized by torture porn and jump scares.

It's called a "slow burn". It takes a while to get going and thrives on occasional moment of tension. And it's certainly a more masterful way of making a horror film that going crazy with SFX, blood, and the like.

it might have been scary in 1970s... definitive.
Today we're getting TV Shows like "Supernatural" and movies like "Saw" which are more scary/brutal than this movie so it might for horror-goers more boring because not having any splatter effects etc.

But i think it still works today. The horror begins step by step and lot things happen in our head I would say.

saw is gory but not that scary . this has atmosphere and some gore

Saw is like Armani suit (Halloween) remade in China. You really have to be a very unimaginative person to even ask if this was ever scary for it's a lame word to describe the deep unsettling tone of the Omen.

reply

It's satanic and demonic, something you can't see, could be in your room now, that's scary.

reply

It is fine of you didn't like it, but to me, in its genre, The Omen is a masterpiece. All the elements work great together!

Well, I quite like it. I think it has everything you could want in a horror movie. Atmosphere, suspense, good acting, a good story, an exquisite soundtrack, and iconic death scenes. It isn't a movie for those with a short attention span. It requires you to pay attention and concentrate on the story whereas some other horror movies are just mindless entertainment with jump scares.

reply

To me it was more sad than scary. Too much tragedy actually is more depressing than it is scary. Horrifying to say the least.

reply

It was not scary to me, and I saw it in its original theatrical release. I had been spoiled by The Exorcist and was expecting The Omen to come within at least within a stone's throw of the Friedkin-Blatty film. I was shocked and dismayed at The Omen's amateurishness, its predictability, its fundamentalism and sheer stupidity. The only things I liked about the film were Goldsmith's monumental score and the slick cinemaphotography.

reply

It can't compare to The Exorcist for terror but it clearly has it's moments. Like one person noted it is sad as much as scary. The way Mr Thorn is torn between what he begins to realize is true (what the old priest told him) & having to kill his child, though it isn't really his.

reply

The music, the hanging babysitter, the Rottweiler's, the impaling of the priest scene, creepy Damien, it's very much so scary.

I saw this recently (first time viewing) and I found it creepy as hell. As others have said it's what you don't see that is scary. It's the atmosphere of dread and the insidious background presence and influences of the devil that unsettles.

The Ninth Gate (another film you'd find boring no doubt) also does this very well. There are no CGI devils or demons on display, there are instead subtle occurrences, implications, evil presences and the almighty atmosphere of dread.
