Nickname is Socks?

Right at the beginning Peter Fonda calls her "Socks." She says she doesn't like it, and he comments "the first time we met... you were wearing these outrageous red socks"

I feel like the line was set up to sound like "you left your socks on my floor" but switched to the more family-friendly version so it could play as the 8 o'clock movie (or maybe even to duck an "R" rating? Were the censors that bad in '76?)
