Were Margaret's Christian beliefs based on Shakers?
The aversion to sex and wild bodily movements sort of make it seem that she and Ralph joined some sort of a Shaker off-shoot Christian Cult; anybody else thinks that?

In addition to what RealRockerHalloween said, Margaret's religion was based closely on evangelical Baptist religion. Think of the Duggar family or the polygamous Mormon cults out west.

The movie completely side steps it, but the book described her religious history a bit. She wasn't particularly religious growing up, then joined a Christian church when she was a teenager. I forget which denomination, but one of the harsher Protestant versions. Then after a few years she decided they weren't strict enough, especially re: sex... so she left the church and just studied the bible on her own and interpreted it her own way. Which was a problem, because she was clearly insane.
