I just rented this movie and enjoyed every minute of it. It definitely is on a slow burn. We're so conditioned to have the action immediately... I kept itching to press the FF button to get to some action, but I'm glad I stayed with it b/c it was a great movie. Scary b/c it lets you imagine the horror... who's this lady up in the attic? Who are the people in the picture frames? What's going on w/the swimming pool? Great movie.

When I watched it as a child, it would give me nightmares for weeks, but now as an adult, I don't find it scary enough.

I saw this movie in either 1978 or 1979, I was about 5. It was the first horror movie I ever saw and to this day, it's one of the few films to have ever scared me. My cousin used to freak me out by pretending to be the woman in the attic.

It had such a powerful effect on me, that whenever I heard a Burton Cummings song on the radio, I had flashbacks to this movie. I couldn't figure out why until I learned the title was Burnt Offerings (when I was a teenager). I guess that subconsciously I always remembered the title, but couldn't recall it. Now that's a movie that leaves scars!

OTOH Karen black's performance is totally craptastic.

It should be a spooky movie. The book is one of Stephen King's 5 favorite books

I love this movie too it still creeps me out especially the ending. And the chaufer

I agree, it creeps me out every single time I see it! It takes the time to tell a story, has superb cinematography, and good acting.
And those are rare things in horror films.

That chauffeur scared the socks off of me! The way he grinned demonically, and the sunglasses...the coffin...the look.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Yep...this is the only movie that I was actually too scared to make it through alone. Had to re-watch the following day in broad daylight with other people watching with me.

This is by far the scariest haunted house film ever made.

Is there anyone to tell us that she/he was over 18 year old when first watching this film instead of being 5 or 8 or 13?? that, how frightening and unforgettable the movie was then?! LOL

Anyways... I too, love Horror genre and most definitely, especially the haunting house and ghost stories!

Why would you want it remade if you think it's a great film which it is?? Makes no sense!!!
