W-A-A-A-Y Overrated!

C'mon, people - a "7.4" for this movie??!

I had never seen this movie and had great hopes for it after reading some of the imdb reader reviews.

It started off well enough, but I was going to cut it some slack anyway, given that it was the 70's and it had a low budget.

Austin Stoker did a credible job in the lead, and was professional throughout, given what he had to work with. But some of the rest of the people - it was like watching amateur hour.

And Laurie Zimmer - she would go through some extremes, trying hard to be hard-boiled tough-sexy (à la vintage Lauren Bacall in those classic Bogie movies), but just come off being a half-beat off and hard to watch (her acting, that is).

And then there was the pièce de résistance when she is standing woodenly, in that odd slump-shouldered, lobotomized stance looking over her fallen comrade. That was SO stupid-looking!

How some of these scenes got off the cutting-room floor and back into the movie beats the heck out of me.

"7.4"?? I'd give it about a "2.4," worthy of a curiosity look but nothing I'd want to waste my time watching ever again.

I agree it was insanely overrated. I guess it's my fault for letting IMDb ratings influence my choice of movies, but seeing it was by John Carpenter I wanted to watch it because I've always loved his music.
I get it's a 70s B-movie, but it's bad even for 70s standards. It was quite bland. I'm a young guy (23) but I watch a lot of stuff from that era. Loved the Dirty Harry saga and the Death Wish saga, for example. And I love thrillers in general. The thing is, this one didn't manage to build a lot of tension. There were entertaining scenes but it was a lot less than I expected. I know they're quite different genres, but for example Lucio Fulci's "The Psychic" was way superior. And Italian thrillers tend to be considered trash (although I think it was a masterpiece). That said, I'm going to give John Carpenter a second chance, just because I love his music. Should I watch Halloween?

The ratings system on IMDB is fairly accurate when it comes to old films. Theres not as much unusual voting patterns (spikes and hate on movie openings from fan boys etc).
Carpenters style isnt always for everyone so its fine to not like it. I too love his music. The opening to escape from new york is a classic.

"Should I watch Halloween?"
Its the first teen slasher film. Carpenter started that genre.

This is a cult classic and I think Zimmer played a convincing strong woman.
The underground atmosphere held my attention all the way.
