Oliver Wheat 'Stop It! Stop It! Stop It! Stop It! Stop It! Stop It!'

God I wish someone had gutted him. He was annoying in every scene he was in but especially in that one.

Haha, it's true. Herb Edelman's character in this reminded me of his most famous one, Stan in THE GOLDEN GIRLS: a total yutz!

But he had all that cool stuff! I'd be doing the same thing.

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

reply

hahahaha.

Remember, he had to give up playing chess... the stress was bad for his heart. Can't imagine what anxiety a yakuza shootout in his home caused.

LOL _ I agree, he should have copped a cap for sheer whiney-ness. What a kvetch!
...now I do it just to watch their f----n' expression change.

reply

I so hoped he would throw a cat at someone.

Director Sydney Pollack made this movie right after "The Way We Were" (1973), a love story twixt Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford with nary a samarai sword gutting or shootout anywhere. (The only blood was on Redford's mouth when some guy hit him over his "commie wife.")

Anyway, Herb Edelman was in The Way We Were (as Streisand's radio show boss) and I guess Sydney just couldn't help bringing him along for this new movie.

Edelman is roughly the same guy in both movies -- highly respected and competent despite seeming like a big overgrown schulmp of a guy.

I suppose here we are to respect Edelman's character for "staying behind" after WWII and taking on a life among his former foes.

And indeed -- that collection of weapons -- he must have been something in the war. Bright, brave...brutal?

And now a bi-lingual teacher.

But yeah...how'd he survive these house guests with that heart condition?

reply

His cat calmed him down
