Haller's (Slim Pickens) Murder; Question

As they are overpowering him, the camera pans away and it sounds as if they are forcing something into his mouth. Then, as he stands in the middle of the road, apparently in a stooper, there is definitely a foreign object holding his mouth partially open. Anyone know what it was?

There’s no foreign object. They put a rag over his nose and mouth likely soaked in chloroform to render him unconscious. This was a standard bit in movies and TV of the time, though research it and you’ll find that in reality would take a lot longer than a few seconds.
