This movie would struggle to make it to an Indian top 250.
shareSholay IS a great film. A derivative, cliched plot? Sure. Some hammy acting? No arguements here. A denouement that goes on way too long? Agreed.
But what you can't get away from is the sheer exhileration of the film, the incredible impact it had on the psyche of India and most importantly the towering, iconic performances by Amithabh and Amjad Khan.
This film may have faults on all kinds of levels in terms of pure film making but it is a tour-de-force in terms of myth making. In some ways the US film I would draws parralels with is not the Magnificent Seven or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid but instead Jaws - which had a similar impact on US audiences.
10 out of 10.
I agree with rach_dll;I also want to see a Hollywood movie on the Top 250 list....
But that won't happen until a Bollywood movie gets a worldwide acclaim and Acknowledgment.....
But that won't happen until Bollywood makes an original film; not a rip off of Hollywood film.
I gave Sholay 8 and I gave it honestly. There are other Indian movies I gave 10 stars and I think they deserve it more that Sholay to be on the top 250; Films like...

Anand (1970) Rajesh Khanna and Big B.
Zakhm (1998) Ajay Devgun
Satya (1998) Opps don't know the actors name.
