Sholay IS a great film. A derivative, cliched plot? Sure. Some hammy acting? No arguements here. A denouement that goes on way too long? Agreed.
But what you can't get away from is the sheer exhileration of the film, the incredible impact it had on the psyche of India and most importantly the towering, iconic performances by Amithabh and Amjad Khan.
This film may have faults on all kinds of levels in terms of pure film making but it is a tour-de-force in terms of myth making. In some ways the US film I would draws parralels with is not the Magnificent Seven or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid but instead Jaws - which had a similar impact on US audiences.
