I have tried... and tried...

But can't find the appeal of this movie. What's the big deal?

I was involved in theater way back in high school, and half of my friends were rabid fans of this movie. I always loved Tim Curry, and the though of him running around in drag as Dr. Frank N. Furter for 2 hours was just too funny.

Years later, when I finally got around to watching it, I was totally surprised by what a let-down it was. The songs weren't anything special, the plot and themes were lame (ooh, the old Prudishness vs. Decadence battle! That's original and interesting!) and I didn't like any of the characters. I didn't even like Tim Curry's performance- He did it too well, and the character was just too slimy to be likable, not even in the campy-villian way that I had expected.

It was a complete disappointment.

It developed its cult status as a regular halloween event in older theaters filled with half drunk college kids complete with audience participation bits, which would be quite a different experience to watching it at home on your own or with a couple of other friends that have never seen it before.

Also consider for a moment that one of the reasons kids in the 80s loved it is that the older generation didn't get it and it bugged them that kids were singing those songs on their lawn as they shouted at them to get off it.

God I hate threads like this. I swear, every single movie board on here has one. "I don't like this movie, why do people like it? I don't get it!"

If you don't get it, you probably never will. It's doubtful that having someone explain to you why they find it appealing will sway your opinion one way or the other.

Only because I thought I was missing something.

Na, it sucked 40 years ago and sucks today

reply

Well obviously you are and you knew that when you started this thread : )

reply

Well i started one of such threads for A Streetcar Named Desire and the kind people on that board did provide an explanation that made me see the movie in a different light. So you are flat out wrong.

I said it was doubtful, not impossible. But it seems you were just looking for an excuse to expel some passive aggressive nonsense with your last sentence.
