Is it better than Suspiria?

I saw Suspiria, and I loved it, it was amazing. I also hear it cited as Argento's masterpiece, but this film here has the higher rating on IMDb, so I'm wondering if that accurately reflects the general opinion of this film.

Is it really better? I've never seen it, and I'd like to.
Also, does it use that psychotic coloring of lights Suspiria had? Because I loved that.

Suspiria was better. Deep Red was cool but I felt the first half was way too slow. Suspiria is slow too but not as much. Deep Red doesn't kick off until after the scalding bathtub scene.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

Of the two I prefer Suspiria but what is better depends on what you want. Deep Red has a coherent story with proper characters. It's also humorous. Whilst the set is highly stylised it lacks what Suspiria has in terms of colour and a very strong aesthetic that runs throughout. Musically Suspiria is more unusual although Deep Red has some great tracks too.

No, but Deep Red is still the best giallo movie ever made. It's just Suspiria is Argento's undisputed magnum opus.

Suspiria has a horrible musical score. Its cool by Goblin but it becomes unbearably loud sometimes. Deep Red in comparison, baring one scene where Marcus is hanging off the "haunted" house precipice and the music player appears to have a seizure, has a good restrained score.

However, Suspiria has superior kills and more suspense. Deep Red does have that artistic Argento touch. Deep Red does have the whodunit factor that I dig.

I like both of them and consider both to be very entertaining movies.

On the contrary, while Goblin definitely enhanced both movies, I think their work in Suspiria is better than the one in Deep Red. The loud childlike tune is far from horrible and embalms the atmosphere in Suspiria perfectly alongside the nightmarish cinematography. Without Goblin's work in Suspiria, I wouldn't have liked it as much.

Deep Red's score is VERY dated and sometimes laughable (the really upbeat and "groovy" score for the murders). Suspiria's score is timeless and excellent.

Both films are fabulous fun but, personally, I prefer Deep Red. It's scary, funny, crazy, unnerving and bizarre - with great music & unusual characters.
I must get the soundtrack by Goblin!

reply

Yes it is. Many consider Deep Red his best film and his masterpiece. Suspiria is his scariest film but Deep Red is his all time best movie.

I watched DEEP RED first and loved it. Great horror/mystery/detective movie (or short; giallo). So I had great expectations on SUSPIRIA... What a disappointment!
There's nothing worse that starting a movie and constructing a mystery in a "natural" way and then give it a "supernatural" solution. That's just cheap and uncreative.
DEEP RED on the other hand starts "natural" and ends "natural". The murder is not a witch, ghost or someone with supernatural powers...

It's just my opinion btw... so don't kill me if you think different *lol*

reply

Definitely not.
I had read a lot of great comments on that movie and
I loved it until the Final scene.
Suspiria is better IMO.

I thought Suspiria was fun but extremely overrated, Profodo Rosso is the first Argento movie I've seen that deserves the hype.

I don't think so. Though it might be subjective, I think the audio and visual construction of Suspiria worked for me far better than it did in Deep Red, whose music and score I found a bit out of place for a film such as this. Also, the editing, and the supernatural, occult theme of Suspiria intrigued me and got hold of me unlike Deep Red. Suspiria was excellent, a haunting film. Deep Red fell way short, it's nowhere near the quality of Suspiria. The music, the visuals, the climax of Suspiria still haunts me whenever I think of it. One can argue that Deep Red is more conventional movie but still, everything worked for Suspiria.
