this movie is awful!!

She gives up her blossoming career to go back to a misognist egoist who tells her point-blank that her dreams mean nothing? Sure, the fashion industry is full of difficult people, but she has all sorts of momentum; she's young. She can do a lot to change the fashion world. That she gives up on her dreams makes this movie AWFUL.

I think it's awful simply because this type of movie was growing gray whiskers on it back when Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were doing their thing in the Thirties and Forties. Anthony Perkins' character provides the only sparks.

The editing of this film was absolutely horrible. I saw it in the movies when it first came out. It made no sense at all.

Thank you for quoting from Pauline Kael's review of "Mahogany" without citing your source.

we don't know that she gave up. We do know that she went back to support him. Also, the only person she had to rely on in europe was a man who wanted her body and helped her for all the wrong reasons and another who sabotaged her efforts, even though he created the successful model she became.

What did she have in europe? Christian, whose fashion line came with baggage... his bed?

reply

no people , Don't most of you see what is going on with Britney Spears?
The whole point of the movie is "success is nothing without someone you love to share it with"

All these celebrities are seeking fame and when they find out there is nothing to it they go crazy, and we watch them do it while we eat popcorn.

As an artist, I understand where she was coming from, but he is right human suffering is more important than art. And who knows, she might have still been a designer, but smarter and happier because she was with someone who cared.

I am amazed that this movie is not on the Rotten Tomato web site. They bashed Ross other film of Lady Sing the Blues.

Pure trash for Diana Ross. With all of the black actress of 75' they chose her.

I truly hope that they do a remake of this story. (Lady Sings the Blues). It has a good story line. I loved Billy Holliday and Maxine Sullivan even more.

There also was a lot of black entertainment in Chicago when Maxine Sullivan was alive.

Getting back to this stupid movie, a lot of black women in 75' did have dreams that were not accomplished or acquired.

I had a lot a black friends in Chicago who did make it to Hollywood. If they do a remake of this movie, they could choose Halley Barry for instance.

don't flame because of Diana Ross. She can sing better than Whitney Houston.

LADY SINGS THE BLUES is fine just the way it is. I'm only surprised that Billy Dee Williams wasn't nominated for an Oscar along with Diana Ross. I wouldn't be surprised if they remade MAHOGANY, but the story was creaky from age back in 1975. Doing it in the 21ST Century would be kind of silly unless they set it in the past. If they do remake it, one thing would make it really good: David Arquette as Sean!

I loved this story so much that when I wrote (and published) my book I made sure that my heroine went to France and Rome. The bulk of the story is set in both locations. My character, an actress/dancer goes to france for work where she is duped into signing a contract as a burlesque dancer in an underground cafe. There, she attracts the attention of a rich play boy and a poor french actor (cue love triange), one of whom sweeps her off of her feet and takes her to Italy.

Maybe if a modern-day 'Mahogany' is made they can just make my story instead (ha) and cast beyonce in the role as the lead and terrance howard as the billy dee. He's the only one with swagger enough to pull off that sexy virile male energy that BDW pulled off so ably.

Beyonce still has alot to learn about acting.

You go, fellow aspiring writer! Probably have more chance than me, heh! At any rate, the theme song from Mahogany is all too relateable. I also recall when it first came out.

Hey no longer aspiring buddy, I've got three books now (I'm on my other acct at work). I'll send you a link.

Oh come now Diana sing better than Whitney?
No way that is true.
Whitneys vocals would sweep Diana out the door.
Put the two of them in a room without a mike.
And Diana would be lost.

reply

Luther Vandross was asked once who was his favorite singer and he said, best singer for him - of all time was Diana Ross. This was back when Whitney was one of the hottest stars out there. His reason for saying that was that Diana's voice was pure. If you listen to it, it is the softest, mellowest, butter soft voice you'll ever hear. Well, not ever but just I love the fact that she never had to go crazy with the rifts or anything. Her voice was pure, he was right.

If all it takes is a showdown in a room without a mike, put me in a room with Whitney; she would be lost. And I can't sing.

If what it takes is something more than blasting power, then it's about Diana (Miss Ross to you and me and the rest of the mortal world) hands down.

LOL No need to get stupid.

..I'd go to middle earth and look for Unspoiled Monsters. Then move to the country.

Diana better than Whitney?
I think you need your hearing checked.
look I like Diana.
But she is not in the same Caliber as Whitney.
Even now with her reduced voice.
She can out sing Diana.
Apples and Oranges.

No....I'll tell you what was awful and laughable at the same time, and that
was the scene with Sean McAvoy shooting the models at the department store where Tracy worked! LOL!!

I can only assume for the sake of the scene they chose the worse looking models I have ever laid eyes on!!
They were unattractive (for modeling) and funny at the same time!

Sean's dialogue during the scene was simply priceless!!

...."your other right shoulder honey."
...."too horny; look as if you haven't been had.....you've been had."

Absolutely wonderful....great writing, and a superb performance by
Tony Perkins. I forgot he was acting, and was totally absorbed into his
portrayal as a fashion photographer!

And what a delight to see Billy Dee Williams and Diana Ross paired again
as a sexy, passionate, handsome and beautiful couple!

One of my favorites!!

Complete agreement.

Seeing this 46 years later, I was shocked to find Anthony Perkins to be the movie’s high point. He’s absolutely convincing as a fashion bug — so much so that I can’t believe those lines were in the script. Too good — maybe they were improvised.

Always found Perkins annoying, and this was no exception when I first saw it at 14. Watching today, his performance is note-perfect. Can’t imagine subbing him out for anyone.

I don't think it's as bad as many say. Sure, it could have been better but I enjoyed it. It's one of my fave "guilty pleasure" movies ever. The clothes are incredible, that alone was worth watching the movie. It doesn't hurt that the soundtrack is great either.

"Why... so... serious?"

reply

I enjoyed the fashion eye candy. Particularly the special people who showed up at the parties and other parts of the mid 70s fashion world. I was suprised to see the goth girl at that one party in Rome.

What I didn't like was the characters of Tracy and Brian as people.

Tracy, the pure user, just took, took, took, took from who ever could help her. Did she pause one single time to appreciate the sacrifices others made to help her succeed? Nope. When she was done, it was over as far as she was concerned.

Brian, was a selfish, self centered, judgmental, misogynistic jerk. The world revolved around him and if he decided he wanted you in his world, your life outside of him was irrelevant.

By the end of the movie, I decided the two of them deserved each other.

This movie couldn't be remade now. You think if you told a woman to give up her career and as Tammi Wynette said..stand by her man..the woman would laugh you out of the room.

Or, the man would do a Kevin Federline, kick back and enjoy the ride. Taking time out to go hang in Las Vegas with his boys, every now and then.

Maybe some theater company could do a "Real Live Mahogany" and camp the hell out of it, like they did several years ago with "The Real Live Valley of the Dolls"... THAT would be a hoot!

reply

I like this movie but it's too much about beauty and fashion. Vanity, baby.

I love the scenes in Rome, better than Chicago. Just seeing the real Colusseum that's been there for thousands of years is worth watching it for that price alone.

In that case hopefully you can go see it yourself someday. It's beautiful. The only thing I didn't like was that it was too close to the city. To me it seemed like it should be out in some field or hilltop or something.
