Where do Jeanne and Sylvain go in the evenings?

We see them going out every evening after dinner and homework -- is it just for a walk around, or did they have a destination?

Also -- on the day the potatoes have to be re-done, doesn't Sylvain say something like "Should we not go tonight, as dinner was so late?" and Jeanne seems to agree on skipping their outing, but then they do get up and go out all the same. Which part of this have I got wrong?

Sylvain hurries his mother to go out because they had dinner later than usual.
It's not intended for the viewer to understand where they are going every night. I guess it's just to highlight the predominance of routine in their life style but in a slighty uncanny way.

Also she always put something in the stove when they come back, did someone understand what it is?

They go out to see the latest Michael Bay movie-hee, hee (Please allow for the anachronism).

'ppreciate it :)))

I thought they might go to a church service.

Jeanne seems to agree with Sylvain to skip their evening trip but then both go out as the OP says. Perhaps this is to show how ingrained their routine is; even though both want the evening off they can't avoid the routine.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

I don't know why everyone is saying she seems to agree with skipping it. He asks if they can skip it and she insists, "we're going". This is how the subtitles translate "si". In French this is different from "oui". It basically means "yuh-HUH", like when someone says a negative thing and you insist on the positive, contradicting them. Her son says maybe they shouldn't go out tonight since they ate so late, and she immediately and firmly shuts him down.
