I believe, Mr Stander, adds immeasurably to the success of this under rated pic;

his character is hilarious just in the way he 'underplays' his role, for example.

He has a quality of likeability and loyalty which helps in carrying the pace\plot of this little 'gem.'

Agreed.

“Don’t … you … ever … do … that … again” is the movie’s best line, perfectly delivered (after a pause).
He is one step from punching Spade out and Segal’s reaction shows it.
