surely this is worth a re-appraisal?

Guardian uk are currently showing a clip that doesn't look too bad.

I just watched it and I love it. Another case of wrong timing when it was released. The critics were out to bet the director and his star, but now looking back at it, the film is nothing short of charming and wonderful.

Even poignant.

Doctor Mabuse, Evil Genius, King of Crime

I agree completely - it is charming and beautifully produced. Vastly and often viciously underrated.

This film might have been better if more of its leads had been able to sing or dance--or in the case of Duilio del Prete, speak English.

reply

I thought the leads were charming and acquitted themselves well enough as singers and dancers. Kahn and del Prete had somewhat professional musical chops, while Shepard and Reynolds had pleasant amateur talents.

As for del Prete's accent, he was playing the charming foreigner character that is so common in Hollywood musicals from the '30s and '40s.

reply

Reynolds and Sheppard's singing was fine, if not stage quality. However, they more than made up for limited vocal abilities by the way they ACTED the songs. Both were at times hilarious during their numbers.

Get the Blu ray at Amazon NOW. We don't know how many products were produced of this Blu ray, or if there will ever be a second run.

And years later, my advice turns out to have been on target. You can no longer buy the Bluray on Amazon, and the rare copy showing up on eBay asks ridiculous prices.
