Who is your favorite non-Alphan character ?

Mine is Jack Tanner in Deaths Other Dominion.

Clown college?! You cant eat that.

Dione the Bethan from Season 1, episode 24, "The Last Enemy," which is also in my opinion the best episode. She's cool because she's ruthless and evil, but puts on an appearance of reasonableness for while. The ep is cool because of the way Koenig thwarts her, despite the fact that Bethan technology is far superior to Alphan technology. Full ep on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpVdhYjJm-Y

That walking behemoth played by David Prowse in the episode The Beta Cloud. That thing was the alien equivalent of the Terminator...practically unstoppable. Made the episode especially fun.

reply

The best thing about "The Beta Cloud" is when we see David Prowse's monster bending double and we all hear him groaning in pain (for real!) after Tony throws that cylinder at him in the vacuum chamber! Well, perhaps Dave would have been green cross at the time, but I bet Darth would laugh at himself now if he saw it!

Seriously though, I thought the episode was a poor descendant of the first series episode "End of Eternity" with Peter Bowles superbly playing a smirking, psychotic alien "cold blooded" killer.

"Oh look - a lovely spider! And it's eating a butterfly!"

+1 for Balor. Little do the Alphans know the evil they will unleash on themselves by removing him from his prison cell. Played with absolute maniacal zeal by Peter Bowles.

What's a knockout like you doing in a computer-generated gin joint like this?

reply

I consider Maya an Alpha so, for me, she is out of the mix.

My vote is for Captain Zandor. He was played so intelligently by Christopher Lee and although he was often laconic and soft spoken I really admired the subtle way he made it very clear he was interested in Dr. Russell. A look and comment -- then when her life was threatened you could see his urgency in repairing the damage done. As a matter of fact, he and Koenig are very interesting contrasts. Two really good Commanders, one who wears his emotions on his sleeve (especially when it comes to Helena) and the other nearly unreadable. So yeah, it's Zandor for me.

reply

Too bad they didn't explore the character of Zantor further instead of wasting all that time milking the Helena in stasis situation.

Kind of partial to Joan Collins in the Mission of the Darians. Non-stop leg-shot for 30 seconds. Did she even speak? Who cares. All of us per-pubescent boys were waiting to see if that skirt was going up any higher so we could see what our fathers were always talking about with their friends and we had no idea to what they were referring.

Kate: You lost your birthright in one hand of poker?

Luc: I'm an ass-a-hole. What can I tell you?

reply

She spoke, all right. And she was most guys' dream and every condom manufacturere's nightmare (she was sterile).
Humorous note: before filming, Barbara Bain demanded that she wear a skirt even shorter than the one Joan Collins was wearing (which explains why she was wearing her caveman clothing from "The Full Circle"). But she still wasn't satisfied and tried to talk Gerry Anderson into not allowing Joan 's legs to show. Anderson then refused Bain's request.

Zandor. He was a nice guy without some hidden agenda. I waited for him to pull a fast one like other aliens but he never did.

I did like Balor to an extent-he was the creepiest alien in my book. He sort of looked like Johnny Cash going insane.

reply

Maybe he sang Folsom Prison Blues inside the asteroid.

I'd have to say all of the glamorous space vixens who overdress and/or overact for the situation. This is probably best personified by Kara (Joan Collins in Mission of the Darians), but Dione (The Last Enemy), Sahala (Dorzak), and Elizia (Devils Planet) all make me realise that even in outer space there's always good reason to pack make-up and a full length evening gown.

Props too to Arra (Collision Course) and Zantor (Earthbound) for sheer presence.

reply

Kara and Elizia never left home, but point well taken with the others.

reply

Not really the point I was making, but they did. Kara left Daria a thousand years ago (which is actually when Joan Collins was born), and Elizia was originally from Ellna and only went to Entra so she could play dominatrix and whip some guys with her sistas. Much like a sex tourist going to Amsterdam.

Only abusing their bodies instead of their brain cells.

Well...so far it seems that Balor and Zantor are tied for most popular at this point.

...I will say that Zantor was interesting. He has one of the best throw-away lines in the series. When Simmonds has him at gun point and Koenig is trying to negotiate Zantor says, "...the Commissioner is [gives the smallest of pauses] diseased...".  He says all the other words so flatly but 'diseased' he gives a little Zantor emphasis to so it comes of sooooooo insulting...for a low-key guy like him I mean.

(Roy Dotrice, as Simmonds, reacts to it perfectly by smirking and giving a slight chuckle at the insult, as if to say, 'ha. yeah. good one, alien-dude. You'll notice I'm the one getting my 'diseased' ass off of this rock.')

Hey! Can I vote for Simmonds? He technically is NOT a real Alphan. Just an Earth-based administrator caught up in the mix. Great slimy 'vilain'.

No. My actual vote if for Balor. I mean, in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Guest Alien you really can't say anyone surpassed that nutter. He went from humble, grateful, ethereal figure...to psychopathic homicidal rampaging killing machine very nicely. And, speaking of being able to take a small line and make it special, the way he says, "I'm going to kill you, Koenig." in such a pleasant way always makes me laugh!  ...but then I like it when any alien threatens Koenig.

The actor really put on a unassailable performance. When Koenig finally confronts him about making that eagle pilot go crazy, and Balor looks confused, almost regretful, turns his back to the camera, and it looks like he's about to deny being responsible...and then he suddenly turns around with that wide-eyed maniacal expression on his face and says, "You're right!" Well...that's the moment you realize, ah, yeah, this has havoc written all over it! Right from there it pretty much becomes The Balor Show until the very climactic ending. 

Both "Earthbound" and "End of Eternity" were among the very few that I had missed during the show's original run. Had to wait for the reruns after season two, and they were both worth the wait. Freiberger obviously modeled "The Beta Cloud" after "Eternity" and it was definitely a step down.
