Any other decent 70's crime films?

I love this film, and also the Dirty Harry films. Can anyone recommend any other 70's stuff I might enjoy?

I've also watched "Two Minute Warning". Although not nearly as good as this, it's the kind of thing I'm after.

Assume you've seen Dog Day Afternoon? I'd also recommend the original Italian Job (1969) with Michael Caine. Different tone, but similar mix of humor and action to Pelham.

For more pure crime/action, the original The Getaway with Steve McQueen (1972) is quite good and The Day of the Jackal (1973) is terrific. If you want a super gritty Michael Caine, then I recommend Get Carter. All subject to horrible remakes, but the originals still stand up.

Assault On Precinct 13 (1976) and The French Connection I & II.

THE SILENT PARTNER (Elliot Gould, Christopher Plummer). Filmed in Toronto at Eaton Centre. The late John Candy has a cameo.

Busting with Eliott Gould and Robert Blake.

The caper comedy The Hot Rock with Robert Redford and George Segal is fantastic, I try to watch it at least once per year and more often if I can.

Also there's The Conversation with Gene Hackman, an amazing movie, one I have watched dozens of times and it never gets old.

Another is Silver Streak with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor although I guess it's more comedy than caper, alongside Clint Eastwood's Kelly's Heroes.

Another from the time but maybe not the genre (?) is Capricorn One (Elliot Gould and James Brolin) which is about a huge crime that is more of a political conspiracy thriller I guess.

Lots of others I'm forgetting because I'm old enough to have seen them! LOL.

Of all the ones that have been mentioned, THE SILENT PARTNER and THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE are the best of the best, IMO!

reply

If you're a fan of film noir, Chinatown is excellent.

No arguments with any of the suggestions- just wanted to agree about Day Of The Jackal - really an amazing film!

Another vote for "Day of the Jackal", IMHO one of the best films of a decade that produced many that still stand the test of time. I scarcely noticed the long running time (two+ hours) because the story was so gripping.
On the strength of it, I read Frederick Forsythe's novel, which the film was based on, plus two more of his novels, "The Odessa File" and "The Dogs of War" (both of which engendered feature films, as well).
Much of the credit has to go to the taut direction of Fred Zinneman ("High Noon"). In my mind, the appeal of films of this caliber (several other good ones mentioned by others, earlier in this thread) is the emphasis on a strong story and masterful story-telling, who needs whiz-bang special FX when you have a strong story, powerfully told?

I can't believe no one recommended "The French Connection"!

reply

Someone did recommend "French Connection" 1 and 2. 1 is the better but you need to watch 2 for closure.

reply

I agree with lots of the aforementioned films. Serpico and Taxi Driver should also be close to the top of the list.
