Kay couldn't get off the compound. How could she [SPOILERS]

As we saw, Tom was under instructions from Michael not to let Kay off the compound for her own protection. She is seen being turned back from going into town to go shopping with the kids.

Then how the hell could she ever get an abortion? What, one of the nice Italian Catholic women living on the compound performed it for her? Yeah, right. And I don't think back in 1958, that abortionists made house calls.

Again, I can't believe I'm just noticing this after 40 years.

First off Kay ain't Italian and she's not Cathloic. Yea I never understand that part. Kinda makes no sense because where was the doctor at lol. You would think the doctor know better than to mess with Michael aka the Don and do this behind his back.

reply

First off Kay ain't Italian and she's not Cathloic.

No duh. But the only people who are going to be able to do the abortion on the compound would be any one of a bunch of nice old Sicilian ladies living there. Unless Kay was able to abort it herself, as Stevicus suggests below. Which sounds silly.

But hell yeah, I agree with you - NO WAAAAAAY a doctor's going to do this to the wife of the most powerful mob boss in the country.

Kay may not be Italian but Catholics in general have a very deem view of abortion.

Second, in the book, Kay converted to Catholicism and was as religious as Mama Corleone. Though they changed Kay in the film, I believe she still converted to Catholicism. New converts tend to be the most fanatic.

Third, I don't think nor do I believe she had an abortion. I think she had a miscarriage and simply said 'abortion' to hurt Michael. She had no opportunity to have an abortion first of all. Second, no one, not even Tom Hagen would ever help or assist her for 2 reasons:
-Catholicism
-Michael (and this trumps everything)

I don't think they would risk Michael's ire as abortion is considered murder of an innocent in a Catholic's eye. Kay may have gotten away with it, but Tom? No way.

reply

I wondered about this myself, and after a few previous discussions related to this, a few possibilities were brought up:

1. Tom Hagen could have sympathized with Kay and assisted her in arranging the abortion.

2. Kay could have disguised it as a regular pre-natal examination. Since she was pregnant, they would have had to find a way to let her leave for that. But then that leaves the question as to whether the doctor would have been willing to risk performing an illegal abortion for the wife of the country's most powerful Mob boss.

3. Kay could have induced the abortion/miscarriage on her own.

reply

1. I don't see Hagen doing it. He was never shown to have any kind of special attachment to Kay to rish his neck like that. See number 2.

2. This is the biggest problem I have with the whole thing. NOOOO WAAAAAAAY any doctor is going to do this to the wife of the head of the mafia. Which leaves . . .

3. This is the ONLY POSSIBLE WAY it could have done. But even here, how? It's not as if Kay had access to the internet to figure out how. Did she punch herself? Did she shove a wire hanger up there? How would she know to do this? Is this knowledge that girls routinely shared with each other in the 30s at sleepaway camp?

1. True, although when Hagen tells Michael about Kay's miscarriage, he seems a bit evasive. Michael gets angry about this, "Why can't you give me a straight answer anymore? Was it a boy?"

2. Probably not her regular family doctor. However, since the Corleones operate brothels and Nevada hotels with showgirls, I think they would be aware of and know doctors who would do illegal abortions (and have the money to have them performed in medically-safe environments).

I don't think the thread is still up, but I recall that various ways were brought up as to how she could have done it (albeit with a good deal of risk). Unfortunately, I don't remember what they were. Kay was college-educated and most likely quite well-read, so she may have read about it in books and articles.

Also, I think Fredo's wife was a former actress who was in Hollywood and friends with Johnny Fontaine, so they weren't all Catholic women on the compound. She might have had some connections or previous knowledge about the subject.

True, but again, Kay was always shown as being completely insulated from that business. Unless Tom arranged it, but even then he's still seen as loyal to Mike. I don't see his being disloyal to Mike - and especially not over something like this. His "evasiveness" is just in relation to a sensitive personal topic, is all.

Out of everything, that makes the most sense of all.

4. Or Kay could have lied to Michael and it really was a miscarriage. At that point she was desperate for a way out of her marriage and she very easily could have lied to get Michael angry enough to let her go... I think that's a very real possibility...and in some ways makes a bit more sense then Kay managing to keep a abortion secret from everyone on the compound let alone finding a doctor willing to do it in the 1950's.

By saying it was a abortion Kay was, in the sense, giving herself power over Michael where she had previously always been under his complete control ..it was Kay basically saying "you can't control me, see I can take your son away from you if I so choose...I can play dirty too Michael" ..hence her stressing it was a boy because she knew that would hurt Michael the worst. That whole speech was just her trying to *bleep* Michael off enough to let her go and to gain some measure of power over him.

Good option there, Weber. I like it.

Always believed this to be the case.

She obviously intended to get rid of the baby. Is 'miscarriage' then the correct word to use? I don't know how she did it. But you have to take in to account the extreme measures you have to do to deliberately make that happen. Wouldn't any of Michael's loyal henchmen spot her doing actions like that?

On top of that, why didn't Michael himself ask all of his trustworthy ones about how she could have been able to take an abortion under such security? On top of that, was abortion even legal in any state around the year 1960?

Face it, lots of things doesn't add up no matter which theory you have. This is a plot hole.

One more reason to think that Kay miscarried and lied to Michael about having an abortion to spite him beyond repair.

He who conquers himself is mightier than he who conquers a city.

Honestly, I don't think she had an abortion, one main reason is she had no opportunity to do it and second, Kay converted to Catholicism and they're usually the most fanatic.
