I mean.....one minute they are in the paddy wagon, and next minute they are walking and smiling happy......I don't get it.

My exact thought as well. I guess the writers didn't want to imply that "everything was hunky-dorry" because the whole movie was pointing out the problems of the welfare system, Blacks getting jobs, etc. But they wanted to say something positive in the end-- even in all the mess. They should have chosen a different way of saying it, at least a clearer way.

I just saw the movie and it was kinda goofy to end it the way it did. However, the scene where the father then the mother, then all the kids join in the paddy wagon, shows that they will stick together through thick and thin. I assumed in the end, it's them coming back from jail after being released. The idea that you can't keep the black man down was a point they tried to make several times throughout the movie.

What is even more shocking that Diahann Carroll got nominated for an Oscar for this movie having an afterschool special ending and all.

I mean, maybe if it ended like Dead Presidents, John Q, .....and Justice For All or Goodfellas, perhaps her nomination would have held ALOT more water.

Sorry, I just couldn't help it. I love that song. Anyway no one was actually place in the patty wagon or arrested but Rubin. Everybody else hopped in there on their own. Also, they couldn't processed the kids and considering the nature of the crime, the adults would have likely gotten off with a warning or a citation.

I think either it’s a fast forward scene to when they have all made it out of jail and are back together.
