Did he.....

in the scene where he sleeps with a school girl whilst working at the fairground, does he rape her? becasue from the girls reaction that is whats implied?

reply

Ol' Jim certainly forces himself upon her to get the job done as she begins to attempt to resist, and then she eventually gives in to his somewhat stronger advances by asking him not to tell anyone. The scene does illustrate a very close argument for a rape issue. When viewed today it most certainly is a very risque scene; the girl appears to be in her early teens.

reply

Yes, he does; there's no two ways about it, Jim's a nonce! They should have castrated the randy young bastard.

reply

I'd call it rape. She appears to give in at the end, but I don't think that constitutes consent. Regardless, she's a minor and he isn't, so it's statutory rape at the very least.

reply

Even Mike (Ringo) is pissed that he even tried anything with 'that little schoolgirl'. and says you just piss me off sometimes you do

reply

You know what...when I was that sort of age and growing up in that time my girlfriends always wanted to do it but their fear of 'everyone' knowing outweighed their fear of getting pregnant. They didn't want to be thought of as a 'tart' or a 'slag'.
No one I knew who saw the film thought he raped her. She fancied him but decided to let him have his way, probably in the hope that he would like her more and continue to see her. There was always this thing that if you said no you were still a 'good' girl in the boy's eyes and he hopefully wouldn't think you were cheap.
Never really worked though..

reply

Yes, it's rape. It says something about how society has changed that the scene would have even been written back then without any other thought than that the J Mac character was a bit of a dog for doing it. Looking at it now it is unequivocally a rape and the protagonist of the movie suddenly becomes someone we want to fail. Can't see that would have been the producers' intention.

Kills the film imo for a modern viewer. If this movie still has any commercial value, the copyright holders would be well served to go back and cut the scene out. (It really does add nothing good.) And I say that as someone who is usually averse to seeing old movies tinkered with.

They should leave it in. Because that scene shows what a despicable person he has become; He then cheats on his fianceé with her best friend - who also happens to be his best mate's girl!! Then he walks out on his wife and child. Great guy...
