I saw this as a very young child (spoilers)

I saw this version of The Little Mermaid when I was around 4 or 5 years old... you know, the fact that the mermaid kills herself went completely over my head at the time. I think the fish even says something like "No Marina, don't do it!"... has anyone else seen this as a small child? if yes, what we your experiences?

I remember watching this as a kid and just wanting to scream NO when she killed herself.

I used to watch this movie all the time when I was a child. Just a few years back I went digging through my old movies and found it again, of course I decided to watch this. When I was younger the death of Marina never really clicked in my head. I watched this when I was like five though so it's understandable I guess.

Yep--I saw this as a kid too. It's the Little Mermaid cartoon that's haunted me for years. I LOVE it because it made me think and it made me feel for Marina, her dolphin friend, the prince...all the characters were three dimensional. I liked this better than the Disney version but I also enjoyed the Disney one because Little Mermaid finally got her happy ending.

The sad ending to Marina is very bittersweet and everytime I read the Little Mermaid or remember the anime, I always wished that the story had an epilogue where the prince thinks about her and there is a chance for them to be together again in another lifetime...or something like that :(

As for getting traumatized, I don't think Andasen dowa ningyo-hime really affected me that way, but the animated version of "Animal Farm" was the cartoon that really shocked me as a child--I was expecting a fun cartoon but was instead exposed to a dictatorial pig having a horse sent to a factory to be killed and turned into glue.

I first saw this when I was in the Philippines when I was about 7-10 years old. It was on the channel GMA-7 Cebu City way back in the 80's. Tragedies in Anime is nothing really new for us when we were growing up, but this one took the cake. Like everyone else, I wanted to plot pain against the characters after watching it. I haven't seen this since.

I found a cheap copy while I was in Japan, but decided not to buy it, and now I'm kick myself in the ass for it. BUT...I have found the English dub of the same exact movie free to download.

I saw it in 2nd or 3rd grade, when we were reading fairy tales in school(now I remember getting impressed on how gory Cinderella was). Thought it was nice, faithful to the book, with a nice addition in the dolphin, though the animation is sometimes too static and I definitely prefer the Disney one. Probably because it has more comedy, man The Little Mermaid is so SAD...

I also saw this at 4 or 5 and it really screwed me up.

I hate the Disney version as I feel all kids have the same right to be traumatized liked I was . . .

Did they ever broadcast this movie with occassional interludes during commercials to a guy walking around talking or showing the Mermaid statue in Copenhagen. I remember that. I only saw this once back in the 70s in Texas so my memory could be wrong. I know they showed the statue at one point though.

Hi, I saw this movie when I was about 4 or 5... The sea-witch scared me to death. The Fritz character also really moved me - especially the scene where he's swimming after Marina's soul (brings tears to my eyes as Im thinking about it). I would love to watch the movie now that I am older - I think I'd appreciate the tragedy of the story much more.

I saw this movie when I was about 5 years old at my cousin's house. Her mother said we'll be watching the little mermaid, and I was excited, but knowing her she bought the movie from a dollar store and it turned out to be this version.

I cried so much because I can't believe something like that can happen to a girl like Marina. And up to this day it still haunts me.
