NO RESURECTION!!!

This might be mentioned on another thread but this has really bothered me. At the end of the movie they cruicified Jesus but they never showed his resurection! The ressurection is part of the story. It proves Jesus' power over death and the grave. It is central to the Christian faith. I was really upset when they failed to include it. Anyone else agree?

I can't remember how the movie ended, but when you see it live, the cast running back onstage and then celebrating with the audience is the resurrection.

What'd they do in the movie? It's been a long time since I've seen it.

That part of the story of Jesus is pretty well-known, it wasn't really necessary to include it. It also may have been a more effective ending - to show the rest of the cast carrying his body off - then to have them all disperse, and then show Jesus 'rising' from the spot where he died.

I haven't seen Godspell for decades, but from a dramatic point of view, I generally find Jesus movies like Jesus Christ Superstar or The Last Temptation of Christ more powerful if they end without a resurrection scene. Jesus's sacrifice always seems more significant if it seems more permanent (and especially if he doesn't seem to know it will only be temporary). Again, I'm just talking drama here, not theology.

There is--and this is no joke--a book about how the sexuality of Jesus was depicted in art down through the centuries. I read it years ago and forget the title and author. The resurrected Jesus was sometimes shown with an erection to show that the life-force hasn't been snuffed out. Maybe GODSPELL should have done something like that.
