What do you think of Regan as her name?

Has Blatty explained why he named her Regan?

Have you ever heard of any women being named Regan?

reply

It's a unisex name. It's unusual and memorable and therefore perfect for the possessed girl in The Exorcist.

reply

My guess is maybe Blatty had some Irish Catholic friends.

Regan as a girl's name seems to have an Irish ring to it.

King Lear's daughter, seems fitting.

Thanks.

In William Peter Blatty's novel there is mention of the fact that when Regan was born, Chris had considered naming her Goneril (another of King Lear's daughters). Just an interesting tidbit for you. 

Regan is an anagram for "anger".

Geena Davis' character on the new Exorcist TV show is named Angela Rance which someone figured out was an anagram for "A clean Regan". In episode 5 we learn that Angela Rance is Regan McNeil.

Dammit. I really need to fire up my DVR. It's getting impossible to avoid spoilers.

In episode 5 we learn that Angela Rance is Regan MacNeil.

...and in subsequent episodes we find out she's not "A Clean Regan" whatsoever.

In fact, she's rather filthy.

You'll love it!

Google: Norse myth Regin. Great story, and it had an influence on the book by Blatty.

Its a prediction, or prophesy of 80's American politics as that Ronald Reagan, one of the most evil and vile leaders of the past 100 years globally, would be voted as President of the U.S. Then there was the fact that all three of his names, Ronald Rowley Reagan, have six letters each; adding up to 666.

What do you think of Regan as her name?

I've always liked it. If it weren't for the association, I wouldn't object to naming my daughter Regan, but I would draw the line at calling her 'Rags'. lol.

reply

I agree, "Rags" is a terrible nickname.

reply

Why not Cordelia, the 'good' daughter? Do some people think Regan was actually superior to Cordelia?
