what exactly were those demon like creatures?

after all these years i don't believe the question of exactly ''what'' those little creatures are has been answered. they are obviously of demonic/evil origin, but to what extent & what kind? another question is ''why'' did they want to ''add'' sally to their ranks, so to speak? was it in an attempt to gain greater numbers & become more of a threat to mankind or to please their evil master, the devil perhaps? it's certainly an interesting question & or questions. what do you think?

I haven't seen this in many years, but I don't think there was an attempt to explain what they were or how they got in that house. Maybe that makes them creepier? Obviously, someone knew about them. Probably the same person that bricked over the fireplace. Not just adding Sally to their ranks, but anyone who tried to live in that house.

I'd like to see this movie again.

To me, the most logical explanation would be good ol demons from Hell. The part of the house that was blocked off was a portal (like the one in 'The Sentinel'), & every few years the demons take some1 and convert them into 1 of their own (also like 'The Sentinel'). The fact that light freax them out would be explained by living underground all their lives.

When I was young I convinced myself that they were her ancestors and that's why they wanted her. 

I'd conjure up the thought of being gone
but I'd probably even do that wrong

It's better they never defined what they were. It makes them scarier because the unknown is frightening. You're left to your own imagination to wonder what these creatures were.

I've always wondered about this as well. This is one of my all-time favorite films. It really creep me out as a kid.

I'm curious as to what the original source material for this was, if any.
